Netflix’s latest true-crime documentary Tiger King explores the life and times of Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, otherwise known as eccentric big cat wrangler Joe Exotic, the Tiger King. He owned the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma prior to being incarcerated for hiring someone to murder his competitor, Carole Baskin.

Amidst the hilarity of Joe’s mullets, many husbands, tiger breeding, and his trial, the 7-part documentary series shows viewers an in-depth look at his zoo, his life, and the feud he had with Baskin. As comical as it all is, the foundation of the documentary is in serious allegations, both against Joe Exotic for animal abuse and for his murder for hire conviction, but there are still things it leaves out.

10 THE MICHAEL JACKSON CONNECTION

It won’t surprise some viewers to know that there was a connection between the eccentric Joe Exotic and the King of Pop, who himself has been the subject of a sensational documentary series. Several valuable animals from Neverland perished in the fire that destroyed Rick Kirkham’s production studio, which contained hundreds of hours of possibly incriminating footage for Joe Exotic TV.

Seven alligators and a crocodile that had been previously owned by Michael Jackson were inside the building that Joe Exotic himself allegedly set on fire. They had been rescued from Neverland Ranch after the King of Pop’s death, but couldn’t be rescued from Joe’s negligence.

9 HE FED HIS CATS HORSES

Watching the series, viewers learn that Joe the Tiger King often fed his cats heavily discounted meat on sale from Walmart, which he also started to feed people on-site in the form of pizzas. This didn’t resemble anything they’d eat in the wild, so he stepped up his menu.

People began donating horses, perhaps not realizing Joe’s intended purpose for them. He’d accept the horses, shoot them in the head, then give the carcasses to his cats to feast on. The cats got their quota of meat, manes, tails, and all, which Joe felt more closely resembled what they’d feast on out of captivity.

8 HIS FIRST HUSBAND DIED OF COMPLICATIONS FROM HIV

While the series focuses primarily on Joe’s marriage to husbands number two and three, Travis Maldonado and John Finlay, nothing is mentioned about his first husband Bryan Rhyne. Joe met Rhyne while working security at a cowboy bar called the Round-Up Saloon when Rhyne was 19, and the pair would spend their days snorting meth, cruising bars, and watching Westerns.

It wasn’t days of wild partying that ended Rhyne’s life, but tragic complications of HIV in 2001. He was there for Joe before he opened the zoo, and lived to see the zoo’s opening, but only experienced it for a short time. In a fitting tribute to his first love, Joe held the funeral there.

7 HE BRIEFLY DATED A CHILD MOLESTER

In between his marriage to Bryan Rhyne and Travis Maldonado, Joe Exotic had a brief romance with JC Hartpence. Due to arguments over how the zoo should be structured as well as his drug habits, Hartpence and Joe were on the outs when he held a gun to Joe’s head. Police were notified of the assault and Hartpence fled.

Since that time, Hartpence has been convicted of molesting a minor in 2004, as well as the murder of a man in 2014. He’s been given a life sentence for his crimes without the possibility of parole.

6 JOE’S LIFE WAS TRAGIC FROM AN EARLY AGE

While much of the colorful series can be viewed as eccentric and hilarious, it has its fair share of tragedy. Joe has had to bury two husbands as well as a brother, and viewers learn when he was a child, he suffered sexual assault. The series doesn’t go into any of the abominable details.

When he was five years old, he was repeatedly assaulted by an older boy who came into his home. It’s not the sort of thing most documentaries tend to linger on, however impactful it was on his adult life and relationships.

5 HE DIDN’T SING HIS OWN SONGS

As entertaining as Joe Exotic’s music is, he can’t be credit for writing or singing it. The musicians responsible for bringing his songs to life are Vince Johnson and Danny Clinton. Thankfully, both of them are listed in the credits for the series, but aren’t mentioned by Joe himself onscreen.

Rick Kirkham, the prospective director of Joe’s upcoming reality television series, outed Joe as being unable to carry the tune of his owns songs. He lip syncs everything in his videos which, while not totally outside the realm of fiction for musicians, is in poor taste to not fess up to.

4 JOE FAKED DYING OF CANCER

After the fire that burnt down Rick Kirkham’s production studio, Joe Exotic was hit with another personal tragedy, though he had no one to blame but himself. He declared on social media that he was dying of prostate cancer and he only had two months left to live.

He even went so far as to ask his fans on social media for help with the expenses, until it was revealed that he was never dying of cancer – his prostate was just infected, he was massively dehydrated, and he had an uncomfortable outbreak of herpes. This didn’t stop him from trying to garner sympathy any way he could.

3 HE HAD A VERY BIZARRE YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Before he was hauled off to jail for charges of hiring someone to assassinate rival big cats wrangler Carol Baskin, he had a particularly bizarre YouTube Channel that he maintained up until 2014. It serves as a strange time capsule of the zoo’s proceedings for the truly adventurous.

It contains everything from emotionally charged video love-letters to Travis Maldonado, commemorating their marriage with images and Joe’s music, to videos of two tigers having sex simply titled “Animal Sex.” It’s the Joe Exotic TV we’ll never get.

2 HE’S CURRENTLY SEEKING A PARDON FROM DONALD TRUMP

Netflixs Tiger King 10 Things The Show Leaves Out

In a curious turn of events, he recently addressed the “12 Jury Members” that convicted him in a Facebook post, in which he accuses the Federal Agents and Attorneys of “blinding” them to the truth. He hoped they’d had a chance to watch Tiger King so that his story could be told.

He went on to ask for a “special investigation” and a “Presidential Pardon” from Donald Trump. In his words: “I am pleading with you to please have this looked into. I am currently incarcerated at the Grady County Jail in Oklahoma and facing 20 – 50 years in prison for doing the same thing every zoo and sanctuary owner has had to do at one time or another.”

1 JOE’S SEEKING A $95M SETTLEMENT

Joe’s decided that the charges against him are so erroneous, that he’s holding the United States Department of the Interior, along with the US Fish and Wildlife Service personally responsible. Despite desiring a Presidential Pardon from Donald Trump, he’s also accusing the Trump Administration of doing nothing to help him.

According to his current husband Jeff Lowe (for those counting at home), he’s demanding a combined settlement of $95 million dollars. Joe is being egalitarian – the money isn’t just for him, but for the damage done to his family, his parents, and his animals at the zoo.
