The Nintendo Switch has had a disappointing year in terms of exclusives, except for the juggernaut that is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which might be successful enough to carry the company throughout the year.

It’s no secret that the Switch’s upcoming release schedule is looking bare. The only major upcoming exclusive with a solid release date is Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. There are a couple of notable third-party titles coming in the form of The Outer Worlds and some ports of older games, like Catherine: Full Body and XCOM 2 Collection, but the rest of the year is looking barren. There are some games with “2020” as their release date, like Bravely Default, Axiom Verge 2, No More Heroes III, and Sports Story, but it’s easy to imagine them being pushed back to 2021, especially with everything that is going on in the world.

The Switch has had one massive hit in 2020 and it might be Nintendo’s key to making it through to the end of the year without any more major releases. 2020 is the year that Tom Nook came to town, as Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold a staggering number of copies since release. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has already shipped 11.77 million units, putting it on track to beat the likes of the Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the Pokémon games on the Switch.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is more than just a best-selling Switch game, as it has invaded popular culture at large. The game has seen a ton of attention on social media, with people sharing their costumes and designs for the game all over Twitter. Even celebrities have gotten in on the action, to the point where it seems like everyone is talking about their island. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has seen an unprecedented level of success for the series, to the point where it has already outsold all of the other Animal Crossing games combined.

The other factor to consider is the increased interest in the Switch itself. There are many people who purchased a Nintendo Switch just for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. You can only spend so much time loitering about on island before you crave some excitement, and there just happens to be an entire library of other amazing Switch exclusives waiting to be purchased. The people who waited for Animal Crossing: New Horizons have a ton of free time on their hands due to the self-isolation period, so games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can become perfect ways to spend time. It also helps that both of those games contain Animal Crossing characters.

E3 is canceled and there are rumors that a planned Nintendo Direct for June was canned due to issues regarding COVID-19, but there will likely be some kind of major presentation during the summer. There are rumors circulating that a huge Super Mario Bros. collection is coming this year and there is still the question of the Breath of the Wild sequel, but Nintendo has been keeping its cards close to its chest in regards to new releases. It feels as if Animal Crossing: New Horizons is going to be Nintendo’s biggest game of the year, but its unprecedented level of success means that it could be all the company needs to keep the fans happy, before bringing out some big guns in 2021.
