The original voice actor for Nurse Joy in the Pokémon anime is returning after a sixteen-year long break, as Megan Hollingshead will be voicing characters in Pokémon Journeys: The Series.
Nurse Joy has been a part of the Pokémon anime since the second episode when Ash brought his injured Pikachu in for treatment. The various Nurse Joys are a major part of the franchise and they can be seen in Pokémon Centers throughout the world. Nurse Joy was originally voiced by Megan Hollingshead, who also provided voices for other minor characters, such as Cassidy and Whitney. The last time Hollingshead played Nurse Joy was in “Love at First Flight”, which was broadcast in 2004. Erica Schroeder took over the role of Nurse Joy after Hollingshead left.
After a long absence from the series, Megan Hollingshead is returning to the Pokémon anime. According to Bulbapedia, Hollingshead will be providing additional character voices for Pokémon Journeys: The Series, though it’s currently unclear which characters she will be voicing.
The original voice cast of the Pokémon anime was let go as part of the Pokémon USA recasting controversy, but Hollingshead left the series several years before this happened. Hollingshead departed from 4Kids in 2004, which meant that she also left other roles (including Mai Valentine in Yu-Gi-Oh!) that had to be recast. The rest of the original Pokémon anime voice cast was replaced in 2006 when 4Kids were outbid on the rights to dub the show from TAJ Productions. There was a backlash from this change from both the original cast and the fans at the time. The role of Nurse Joy was recast (again) by Michele Knotz, who voices the character to this day.
This isn’t the first time that one of the original voice cast of the Pokémon anime has returned to the show, but this marks one of the longest gaps between an actor leaving and coming back for a small role. The English version of Pokémon Journeys: The Series won’t debut for a few more weeks, so we’ll have to wait and see which characters Hollingshead voices in her long-awaited return to the show.
