A young version of Princess Leia has reportedly been cast and will play a pivotal role in Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The highly-anticipated limited series will follow the titular character Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) during the character’s exile on Tatooine following the cataclysmic events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Although the show has largely been kept under wraps, details are beginning to emerge about Obi-Wan Kenobi’s plot and cast.

Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of the snarky Jedi master was one of the most universally praised aspects of the controversial prequel trilogy. For years, fans have been clamoring for Lucasfilm to release a movie or series based on the character’s exile so that McGregor could reprise his role. With the project finally coming to fruition, news of actors being cast as younger iterations of original trilogy characters is no surprise, and previously there were reports the show was looking to cast a young Luke and Leia. Now, Obi-Wan Kenobi may have found their Princess Leia.

Jordan Maison of Cinelinx recently reported that “the stuff dealing with Leia is pretty much the impetus for the whole show.” What’s more, he claims that the show has cast Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box, We Can Be Heroes) as a younger version of the beloved princess of Alderaan. Screen Rant has reached out to Disney for comment, but has yet to receive confirmation on the news. Check out the full statement from Cinelinx below:

I can tell you Leia is a part of Kenobi in a big way. In fact, from what I’ve heard, the stuff dealing with Leia is pretty much the impetus for the whole show and what gets Obi-Wan (Ben) into another adventure.

Even better, I can tell you that Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box, We Can Be Heroes) has been cast in the role!

While news of a younger Leia appearing in the show isn’t necessarily surprising, it is interesting to note that she will be playing a pivotal role in the series. Since the show’s initial announcement, many had assumed that conflicts involving a younger Luke would be the catalyst for the show’s events. This is likely because most of the canon stories about Obi-Wan’s exile (most notably in Jason Aaron’s 2015 Star Wars comic run and the animated series Star Wars: Rebels) have relied upon Luke’s endangerment to spark Kenobi into action.

If Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy’s statements are to be taken at face value, fans can also expect to see their fair share of lightsaber action in the show as well. With Imperial Inquisitors set to play a role, Obi-Wan Kenobi seems jam-packed with exciting new story possibilities. Hopefully, the series will live up to the massive expectations fans have set for it.
