The One Piece live-action adaptation cast introduces themselves to viewers in a new promo video. The long-running anime/manga franchise is branching out into a live-action series after over 20 years in its iconic 2D art style. Breaking new barriers in an exciting time for the series, the latest iteration of the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew of Straw Hat Pirates is on its way at Netflix.

The One Piece franchise has had a stellar year, with Eiichiro Oda’s creation passing 1,000 editions in its original manga series as well as in its animated format, sparking celebrations from audiences and creators alike. With a new animated film on the horizon, One Piece Film: Red, the franchise continues to grow its brand by fleshing out much-loved characters for fans of the anime. However, the live-action show may be the biggest undertaking yet, generating huge buzz around a series some may have expected to slow its pace in the coming years.

In a fast-paced promo video released on YouTube by the official One Piece channel, the main cast of the new adaptation introduces themselves to viewers, each wearing a black One Piece t-shirt designed by Oda himself. The promo begins with Taz Skylar introducing himself as Sanji, with words of thanks for Oda, followed by an enthusiastic Jacob Romero Gibson jumping for joy on his couch, slipping into character as Usopp. Next up is Emily Rudd, with a message of excitement for her new role as Nami. Mackenyu, set to appear as Roronoa Zoro in the show, follows with his support. Closing the clip is Iñaki Godoy, who will star as Monkey D. Luffy, exclaiming, “I can’t wait to become the pirate king.” Check out the video below:

The adaptation reboots the story of the Straw Hat Crew, creating a fresh take on the One Piece saga, which began way back in 1997. Monkey D. Luffy will start anew in his quest for the One Piece treasure, and viewers will witness the crew explore the Grand Line in a way unique to the longstanding 2D world the series has maintained for so long. But the characters, set in stone by the enormous success of the franchise over the last two decades, will remain the familiar protagonists that so many have grown to love.

The One Piece live-action show comes as part of a flurry of recent interest in live-action remakes of anime classics, with Cowboy Bebop appearing on Netflix this year. Those who enjoy anime will always be slightly apprehensive when they hear a remake is in the cards. Many have voiced their disappointment with such anime staples as Dragon Ball and Death Note being poorly remade in the past, but One Piece will forge its own reputation, and excitement is only growing for the show’s release.
