Warning: contains major spoilers for Spider-Ham: Great Power, No Responsibility!

The DC and Marvel universes have met on rare occasions, but one variant of Spider-Man thinks the perks might be better in DC’s universe. In Spider-Ham: Great Power, No Responsibility, the titular hero is in the market for a couple of things that he just hasn’t been able to have. However, they’re present in DC’s universe and if he were to find out about it, he’d definitely be packing his bags for a trip.

Spider-Ham debuted in 1983. Since his arrival in the Marvel universe, this piggy has been a bit of a handful. As this new graphic novel illustrates, he isn’t always the best hero. He combines the powers of Spider-Man with the ego of Iron Man, all wrapped up in a goofy exterior. His approval of himself is at an all-time high, while his satisfaction with his life isn’t as high as it could be if he just had a couple more things from his wish list.

Spider-Ham: Great Power, No Responsibility is a new young reader’s graphic novel that has the creative team of Steve Foxe, Shadia Amin, and Rae Crawford. Within it, Spider-Ham is presented the key to the city – which he immediately loses. The Spider-Man variant spends most of his time trying to find it, but he also reveals the things he needs as a hero: a cool hideout, a signal to call for him, and a place to stash all his souvenirs from his adventures.

When Spider-Ham receives the ceremonial key, he immediately jumps to the idea that he can have a Fortress of Spidertude. Spider-Man has never had a hideout matching the intensity of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude – or even Batman’s Batcave. Having a hideout would definitely be a step up. However, that isn’t all Spider-Ham wants. When he calls the mayor’s office about the key, he mentions the “Ham-Signal.” It doesn’t exist, but he clearly thinks throwing up a Bat-Signal style alert for himself would be a great idea. Unfortunately, his world just isn’t ready for him to have the same perks as DC’s heroes.

Nonetheless, Spider-Ham could definitely use a Spidercave. Like Batman, he has a tendency to pick up souvenirs – except his are object he’s taken from the Scavengers (his world’s version of the Avengers). He has Captain Americat’s shield, Thrr’s hammer, Black Panda’s necklace, Croctor Strange’s Eye of Alligamoto, the Tesseract, Hulk-Bunny’s shorts, and what seems to be Squackeye’s glasses. He also has Yondu Udonta’s headpiece, the Guardians of the Galaxy’s first Awesome Mix, and the Infinity Gauntlet (complete with stones?!). Spider-Ham is a big-time collector of superhero objects, all of which would go great in a hideout – to keep them far away from their original owners’ recovering them. This collection might even rival Batman’s Tyrannosaurus rex and his giant penny. The only thing lacking is Spider-Ham’s method of display.

Spider-Ham may not be the most appreciated hero, but he certainly knows the kinds of cool perks heroes deserve to have. Hideouts are a must – and Scavengers headquarters just doesn’t cut it. He knows heroes need quick ways of being contacted so they know they’re needed to save the day. If he could find a way to DC’s universe, he would definitely move into Superman’s Fortress and marvel at Batman’s collection – while trying to think of the best way to snag the Bat-Signal and adapt it for himself. Marvel’s Spider-Ham doesn’t fit DC’s usual type of hero – nor does his parallel, Spider-Man – but even he knows Batman and Superman are living it up.
