A recent, stylistic teaser for The Batman’s release, posted by director Matt Reeves showcases Robert Pattinson’s cowl serving as a symbol for one of The Riddler’s elusive question marks. The highly anticipated installment in the Batman franchise looks towards a turning point for the character, straying away from the explosive and large-scale crossovers with the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman to focus on the detective and noir aspects of Batman’s nature. The film is set for release on March 4, 2022.

The Batman flashes back to the earlier years of Gotham City’s vigilante, taking place in his second year of crimefighting when many of the city’s residents and officials are still wary to put their trust in him. It also portrays the first time that Batman comes into contact with a mysterious serial killer, nicknamed the Riddler, a sly cat burglar, Catwoman, and the bosses of Gotham’s criminal underworld, including Carmine Falcone and Oswald Cobblepot. The film features a star-studded cast alongside Pattinson, including Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell.

In a recent Twitter post from Reeves, a short teaser clip for the film was released, sporting the film’s iconic dark red color scheme. Within the post itself, Batman’s cowl was initially seen alone, before the video’s lighting shifted to show the image in a new light, literally, showing an ominous question mark slowly appearing as the cowl was slotted perfectly into its center. The director finished his post with the caption, “question everything.” View the post below:

This promotional material for The Batman is not the first one for the film that has taken on a level of style to stay in the line with film’s more noir elements. Many posters and banners that have been released over the course of the film’s announcement have included silhouettes, ominous lighting, and exaggerated features, like shadows. Specifically, these posters have all had a focus on the use of stylistic lighting, mainly the use of red, to convey such a tone, much to the joy of many fans who have wanted a more grounded Batman film after the explosive events of the DCEU.

With many of these features constantly being at the forefront of the film’s promotion, The Batman’s faithfulness to the history of the noir genre, and even the source material of Batman comics, is ever apparent. Furthermore, fans of the character can be at ease with the idea that the film may put the most accurate version of Batman on screen in a new light that have not been seen in the past. Either way, audiences will have to wait and see once The Batman releases on March 4, 2022.
