The famous Detective Prince, Goro Akechi first meets Joker while the latter visits a TV Studio the former is shooting a special on. Though each of their opinions over the famous Phantom Thieves couldn’t be more different, the two begin an unlikely friendship. Here’s a spoiler-free guide on how to max out his Confidant in Persona 5 Royal.

Note that in the original Persona 5, Akechi’s confidant ranked up automatically. However, in Royal, his confidant has been completely overhauled, and players will need to manually hang out with him in order to rank up.

Availability

Following the story events on June 10, Akechi’s Confidant will automatically unlock. Afterward, he can usually be found in Kichijoji in front of the Penguin Sniper darts and billiards bar. The exception to this is before Rank 6, in which he will begin appearing in the Leblanc Café.

His appearance schedule is a bit irregular, but will usually be found at night on Wednesday and Saturday. From mid-July to August, those days change to Tuesday and Saturday. Check your map and text messages to confirm his appearance.

You must reach Rank 8 with Akechi by November 17. Otherwise, you will be locked out of the True Ending scene of Persona 5 Royal.

Perks

• Rank 2 || Sleuthing Instinct: Chance to reveal one enemy affinity at the start of battle.
• Rank 4 || Sleuthing Mastery: Chance to reveal all of one enemy’s affinities at the start of battle.
• Rank 6 || Follow-Up: Chance to perform a follow-up attack if Joker’s attack does not down the enemy.*
• Rank 6 || Detective Talk: Chance to step in after Shadow negotiation fails, allowing a retry.*
• Rank 7 || Harison Recovery: Chance to cure status ailments inflicted upon party members.
• Rank 10 || Endure: Chance to withstand an otherwise fatal attack with 1 HP remaining.
• Rank 10 || Protect: Chance to shield Joker from an otherwise fatal attack.

If Joker reaches Rank 6 before Crow joins the Phantom Thieves, these benefits will be added as soon as Crow joins.

Rank Up Events

As with every confidant, having a persona of a corresponding arcana will increase the number of points you earn with them by one. The point increases with a Justice persona on hand are indicated in brackets next to the regular increases as such:

In addition, Akechi is one of the confidants where scoring high on exams will also provide a bonus. Ranking first in the entire school will give you 1.5x affinity points, while ranking within the top ten will give 1.2x. This stacks with the bonuses from having a matching persona. If you’re receiving bonus points on top of 3 points already, you will still see only three musical notes but gain more within the actual mechanics.

This event will occur naturally on 6/10. The conversation choices are irrelevant to your confidant progression.

The deadline to reach this rank is 11/17.

In this event, Crow will fight you in Mementos. Be sure you’re prepared. He uses bless, curse, and almighty skills interchangeably, as well as using some heavy-hitting physical skills. You have to deplete his health to less than one-third within three minutes to trigger the rest of the event.

These events will occur naturally on 12/3.

At night, you will be given a pivotal prompt tonight regarding Crow, if you haven’t chosen both of the two conditions earlier.

If you choose to forget, you will be locked out of Crow’s ultimate persona in the endgame.

If you choose to fulfill your promise, Crow will awaken to his ultimate persona in the endgame. Therefore, it is recommended to pick this option.

Non-Rank Event Hangouts

On one occasion, Akechi will text Joker to hang out with him somewhere. While this hangout will not increase your rank, you will still receive affinity points. Replying to Akechi’s message immediately will incur a 1.2x increase in affinity points. All the same parameters for bonuses apply to non-rank hangouts as well.

7/29 – Hanging out at the Shinagawa Aquarium

Unlocks the Shinagawa location. Unavailable if you haven’t unlocked the Devil Confidant (Ohya Ichiko).

Make sure to equip a Devil persona with you, as Ohya will also be present.
