Phil Spencer has never been one to hide credit where it’s due, even when it relates to his most immediate competition. Spencer “applauded” Sony’s accomplishment with the PS5’s DualSense controller, and he repeated that sentiment in a recent interview with the Kinda Funny Gamescast.

In a wide-ranging conversation that also talked about Game Pass and how it might help revive some of Microsoft’s older franchises, Spencer also talked about the future of Xbox’s hardware, suggesting that the Xbox controller might evolve to have some of the DualSense’s features.

“We’re definitely thinking about different kinds of devices that can bring more games to more places,” he said. “There’s probably some work that we’ll do on the controller. I think Sony’s done a nice job with their controller and we kind of look at some of that and [think] there are things that we should go do.”

Spencer didn’t mention what specific parts of the DualSense he’d want Xbox to emulate, but the features that come to mind is the DualSens’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Haptic feedback allows PS5 owners to actually feel a song on Spotify while also making it easier and more realistic to fire an arrow in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Spencer said that VR is an unlikely addition to the Xbox Series X and that he’s “watching what happens on PC.” He had praise for the Oculus Quest 2 in its “untethered” performance and “ease of use,” suggesting that an Xbox VR device wouldn’t be limited to the Xbox Series X if one were to be produced at all.

In the same interview, Spencer also discussed Game Pass and how it’s become popular enough that user data could be used to justify rebooting old franchises. Microsoft’s old FASA Interactive titles, such as Crimson Skies or MechAssault, are ripe for a reboot and would be “top of the list” for Spencer.
