Eighteen types currently exist in the Pokémon series. Creatures can have either one or two types, and while having one can limit the number of weaknesses a Pokémon has, having two types can be even more helpful. Certain types complement each other very well, allowing the Pokémon with those combinations to compete better in battles.

This is because of an increased number of resistances to opposing attacks, as well as an additional type of move that benefits from a Same Type Attack Bonus. Pokémon are not necessarily great because of their typings, but they certainly help to make creatures more well-rounded and consistent in combat.

10 Ground & Water

This dual-typing has an unfortunate extreme vulnerability to Grass moves, but aside from this, it is an excellent type combination. One of Water’s two weaknesses, Electric, becomes completely ineffective as a result of the Ground-type. Pokémon with these typings also benefit from great attacking capabilities.

Combined, Ground and Water are super-effective against six types, making Pokémon that sport these types very capable combatants. As long as they can avoid leaves and tree branches, Pokémon with a Ground and Water dual-typing are good choices for players with a more strategic mindset.

9 Poison & Dark

The Psychic-type, one of Poison’s weaknesses, is completely nullified by Dark. Poison also neutralizes the super-effective damage that would usually be done to Dark by Fighting, Bug, and Fairy. This leaves the dual-typing only vulnerable to Ground. Although the Poison-type does not have an excess of powerful moves, Dark is rather powerful on the attacking front.

Several Pocket Monsters have this typing, including Drapion, an underrated Pokémon from the Sinnoh region. The dual-typing definitely has its place in the meta, even if it is not often utilized.

8 Fairy & Steel

Zacian, one of the best dual-type Fairy Pokémon, boasts the Fairy/Steel dual-typing, which is part of what makes it such an incredible competitor. Only weak to Ground and Fire, this combination resists a large portion of the attacks in the series. Steel counters both of Fairy’s weaknesses, being immune to Poison-type moves and resistant to Steel-type moves. This makes Fairy even more useful. Fairy is also considered one of the best types in the franchise, able to counter the often overpowered Dragon-type.

7 Dark & Ghost

Before the Fairy-type entered the series in Generation VI, the Dark & Ghost dual-typing was incredibly unique. Spiritomb and Sableye, the only Pokémon that sport this type, held a special place in the meta by not having any type weaknesses. Although this changed in Pokémon X & Y when Fairy came into the picture, this dual-typing still holds its title as one of the best type combinations in the franchise.

While it only resists one type: Poison, it is immune to three types: Normal, Fighting, and Psychic. Many powerful moves come from these two types, allowing these Pokémon to be offensive, as well as defensive, powerhouses.

6 Electric & Fairy

Both Electric and Fairy have few vulnerabilities on their own. Electric is only weak to Ground, and Fairy is only weak to Steel and Poison. By combining the two types, though, they neutralize the Steel-type and gain several resistances. This makes many neutral matchups for the pure Electric or Fairy-type turn in the dual Electric & Fairy-type’s favor.

Fairy’s immunity to Dragon also helps significantly, eliminating one of the most powerful types from the equation. Although only two Pokémon currently have both the Electric and Fairy typings, more will hopefully be added in the future, as it is a useful combination that will benefit skilled and inexperienced players alike.

5 Bug & Steel

When Scizor entered the series in Gold & Silver, it substantially buffed the Scyther line, and it remains one of the best evolutions added in a later generation. This is because of its dual-typing of Bug/Steel. While Bug is notorious for being one of the worst types in the franchise, it does offer several resistances.

Paired with Steel, which has many resistances itself, it is exceptional defensively. The dual-typing is only weak to Fire moves, to which it has an extreme vulnerability. This aside, Bug & Steel can withstand a slew of attacks, making it a great choice for a team.

4 Steel & Dragon

This combination of typings became much more meta-relevant after the Fairy-type came into the series. Before this, it neutralized only three types: the Ice and Dragon threats that were faced by the Dragon typing, as well as the Fire moves that threatened the Steel typing. Once Fairy was introduced, Steel became one of the few types to resist it, which greatly helped the Dragon-type, usually vulnerable to it.

Only weak to Fighting and Ground, the Steel & Dragon dual-typing is a defensive wall against much of the meta. In addition, the Dragon-type is especially offensively viable, remaining as one of the strongest types in the series since its creation.

3 Normal & Ghost

Although no Pokémon currently have this dual-typing, Normal and Ghost complement each other very well, although only defensively. The Normal-type is immune to Ghost, which is one of the Ghost-type’s weaknesses. In addition, Ghost is immune to Fighting, Normal’s only type weakness. This leaves the dual-typing only vulnerable to Dark.

However, the two types are not as offensively capable as many others, partially because Normal is not super-effective against any other type. Regardless, this combination works well defensively and would be interesting to see on a future Pokémon.

2 Flying & Steel

The combination of Flying and Steel helps both types immensely, eliminating the Ground-type from the equation and neutralizing types that are usually super-effective against one or the other. This leaves the combination with two type weaknesses: Fire and Electric. Both Flying and Steel are fairly ineffective against Electric, making it perhaps a Flying & Steel-type Pokémon’s greatest weakness.

In a variety of other matchups, though, this combination is extremely strong. Corviknight is perhaps the coolest regional bird in Pokémon, and that is largely thanks to its Flying/Steel dual-typing.

1 Water & Electric

Water and Electric are arguably two of the most popular types in the series, so it seems strange that only two evolutionary lines in the entire franchise contain both types. These are the Chinchou line and Rotom when in its alternate form Wash. However, the combination can be fairly useful. It only has two vulnerabilities: Ground and Grass. Although both types are not very effective against Grass, Water is super-effective against Ground, helping it to balance out the weakness from its Electric typing. It also helps that Electric resists its own type, neutralizing one of Water’s weaknesses.
