Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl How to Get to Iron Island

It’s a big year for the Pokemon series, which is celebrating its 25 anniversary. Already, fans have seen plenty of events across the internet, the various games such as Pokemon GO, as well as the incredibly popular card game which revealed special sets which sold like hot cakes. As part of the celebration this year, The Pokemon Company also revealed two new games fans could look forward two including the unique looking core game Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

While Arceus isn’t launching until January 2022, as part of the 25th Anniversary celebrations, Nintendo is taking fans back to the Sinnoh region with the remakes Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. While the games themselves are celebrating its 15th Anniversary, these new titles feature a brand new visual style, while retaining the things that fans remember from the Nintendo DS releases like the story and core gameplay loop.

As such, veteran players may likely remember the big story beats and hidden secrets that newer players to Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl may be missing out on. One such place is Iron Island, a completely optional location but one that players will absolutely want to investigate. Here’s how to find the small island and what secrets it holds.

How to Visit Iron Island

Located off of the Western Coast of the Sinnoh Region, Iron Island is a small, ore-rich zone that players can visit once they reach Canalave City. While players will naturally reach Canalave City to take on the gym leader Byron, they don’t actually have to wait until then.

Access to Canalave City can be gained as soon as the HM version of Surf is unlocked. In order to use Surf outside of battles, players will need to take down Fantina at the Hearthstone City gym. At this point, travel to Jubilife City and walk all the way to the left side of the city and use surf to continue heading west.

Once at Canalave City, players should head to the southeastern section of the city to find a sailor standing on a wooden dock near a boat. Talk to the sailor to recieve a prompt asking if they’d like to travel to Iron Island and selecting yes will bring them there.

What’s Found On Iron Island?

The island itself is fairly small and unassuming compared to some of the other locations within the game. The defining feature of this island is the large cave that not only houses all sorts of Pokemon to catch, but Team Galactic grunts to fight as well. Players can come across TMs like Iron Tail as well as plenty of helpful items from Full Restores, Ultra Balls, and plenty more.

Exploring the cave system will eventually lead to a friendly NPC known as Riley, who parners with the player to help clear out the Team Galactic infestation. Not only does Riley heal the player’s party after each battle, but normal Pokemon battles become double battles and multibattles.

Once the faction is cleared out, Riley will give an egg to the player, which will ultimately hatch into a Riolu. It’s worth noting that players will want to ensure they have an open roster slot, as the egg will need to fit into the active team. If there is no room, players will need to head back to Canalave City to deposit one and then head back to Riley who will still be waiting. This is the only way to find a Riolu inside of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and considering how valuable Lucario can be against the Elite Four, this detour is certainly one worth taking.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch.
