Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Which Starter Should You Choose

Ah, the ultimate, unanswerable question: what starter should you pick when you boot up an all new Pokemon game? Given that Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl have just launched all over the world, it’s likely that you and millions of other people are playing rock, paper, scissors with yourselves to decide between Fire, Water, and Grass. Fortunately, we’ve got all the details on the pros and cons of all three Sinnoh starters.

Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of Chimchar, Piplup, and Turtwig to help you decide which starter you should pick in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

Chimchar

Back in 2006, Chimchar had the roughest start of all three starters. Now, however, it gains Power-Up Punch at level 12, which becomes a STAB move when it evolves into Monferno at level 14. Basically, Chimchar now has super-effective moves against the first two gyms, making it the strongest early game starter of the three. Oh how the turn tables.

Chimchar really struggles with the midgame section of Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, although by the sixth gym it gets most of its utility back. In terms of the endgame section, Chimchar is probably tied with Turtwig just behind Piplup, but all in all it’s a balanced pick. It’s worth noting that there are very few Fire-types in Sinnoh outside of the Grand Underground, so unless you plan on adding Rapidash to your team or spending a lot of time in subterranean Hideaways, Chimchar is definitely a good pick for you.

In terms of playstyle, Infernape is fast and hits like a freight train, but is a bit of a glass cannon with a lot of weaknesses.

Piplup

Piplup has an easy time with the first gym in the game, although it really struggles with the second. For the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth gyms, it adds very little utility, meaning you’re going to have to build a very strong team around it just to get by. It trounces gym seven and is trounced by gym eight – a bit of a rollercoaster for sure.

The thing is, Piplup’s final evolution, Empoleon, is by far the strongest of the three starters when it comes to taking on the Pokemon League. That being said, if you want a starter who needs to be compensated for during the easy parts of the game, but will come back and save you during the significantly more difficult endgame, Piplup is definitely the choice for you. Choosing this Pokemon does technically mean you have no need for Gyarados or Floatzel, but if you weren’t planning on running those anyway, this should be a great pick for you.

Empoleon is much slower than Infernape, but it has a lot of bulk and a great defensive typing. Using it effectively will require slow and deliberate play, meaning it’s perfect for a tactician with a decent amount of patience.

Turtwig

While Chimchar excels early on and Piplup is a late game powerhouse, Turtwig is probably the most balanced pick of the three. It easily handles the first gym, doesn’t care a whole lot about the next two, trounces the fourth, is ambivalent towards the fifth, is great against the sixth, gets destroyed by the seventh, and totally rattles the eighth without needing support from anyone else.

Infernape is a great pinch hitter in the Pokemon League, while Empoleon is more of a tanky lead capable of controlling the entire flow of the game. Again, Torterra, Turtwig’s final form, is kind of in the middle. It can do a lot of damage with STAB Earthquake, but its typing isn’t going to do it too many favours. If you’re willing to put time into capturing a couple of Pokemon like Houndoom and Gyarados, Torterra is a perfectly solid pick that you can definitely make work.

I hate to say this again, but Torterra truly is in between Infernape and Empoleon when it comes to playstyle. It’s slow and bulky, but not quite as much as Empoleon. It hits hard, but it’s nowhere near as fast as Infernape. It’s best used as a very good filler Pokemon that you build your team around, the core player who doesn’t do all that much but pulls the rest of the squad together.

Basically, all three starter Pokemon have their merits – it would be a bit silly if they weren’t at least relatively balanced. It mostly boils down to which one you personally like the best and what kind of playstyle you prefer. What’s most important is that you have fun, eh?
