Without a doubt, Pokemon GO players are diligently working at completing the A Spooky Message quest in order to get their hands on Spiritomb. However, it is no simple feat, as some of these quests are quite demanding with the 108 number. For the uninitiated, Niantic likely chose that number because Spiritomb was “formed by 108 spirits.”
It was not, however, formed by 108 berries, though players are required to use that many in the first set of tasks for the aforementioned Special Research. This price can be heavy for some players, and while there is no way to skirt using 108 berries to complete this task in Pokemon GO, there are a few ways to conserve Pokeballs to complete it more efficiently. It’s worth highlighting that players do not have to catch the Pokemon for this to count toward their progress.
Of course, this means the most conservative way would be to give berries to the Pokemon that pop up on the map and then run away. Doing so will count toward the player’s progress while saving the player’s Pokeballs. Since the next step in the Special Research quest requires players to catch 108 Pokemon, it may be worth saving Pokeballs for that task.
However, for those Pokemon GO players who have the extra balls to spare, it’s worth mentioning that every berry used during a Pokemon encounter counts toward the overall progress. Simply put, players could find a difficult Pokemon to catch, use a berry that doesn’t increase the catch rate such as nanab berries, and grind some progress by using regular Pokeballs. This method isn’t as conservative, but neither are players wasting their best Pokeballs.
Once this is complete, players are rewarded with a Lickitung encounter. Despite this encounter, its cross-generation evolution Lickilicky is not yet available in the game. Still, completing this task puts Pokemon GO players one step closer to a Spiritomb, which is a reward in of itself.
