Pokémon GO Kanto Throwback Challenge All The Quests Spawns And More

Pokémon GO is heading way back in time this week to celebrate the Kanto Region. The throwback event starts today (Friday, May 1, 2020) at 1 pm local time, and will run for a week until May 8, also ending at 1 pm. While the event’s nine steps of Field Research (ending in a very special reward) will be the driving force of the next week, that’s not all this special Kanto-themed event has to offer.

Shiny Venonat Joins The Battle

As trainers would come to expect from an event celebrating Kanto, spawns of Pokémon first introduced in the region will be far more frequent this coming week. Venonat and Chansey will be appearing all over the place, with the shiny variant of the former making its Pokémon GO debut.

Hatching eggs appears to be what the smart trainers will be doing for the next seven days – those with gaps in the first 15o Pokémon in their Pokédex, at least. Scyther, Venonat, Machop, Lapras, Pinsir, Eevee, Tangela, and Onix will all be hatching from 7km eggs attained during this period.

It wouldn’t be a special Pokémon GO event if there wasn’t a Pikachu wearing a novelty hat to be caught. Since this is an event celebrating all things Kanto, it would be almost criminal not to have that familiar element. This time, the electric-type will be wearing a Charizard hat. Why? Because Charizard has been voted the world’s most popular Kanto-based Pokémon. There may also be special region-locked Pikachu wearing hats celebrating whichever Pokémon that part of the world picked as their Kanto favorite.

Nine Steps, Eight Gym Leaders, & Something Very Special

As mentioned above, the real driving force of this event is its research. There are nine steps to complete in total, the first eight of which are themed around Kanto’s eight gym leaders. At least one task in every step will require trainers to catch a Pokémon related to the type of that gym leader. So a rock-type for step one, water-type for step two, and so on.

Look away now if you want the Pokémon encounters (offered up as rewards for completing each step) to remain a surprise. So in keeping with the theme, the encounter for the first eight steps will be with the strongest Pokémon from that respective gym leader’s line-up. All eight, in order, can be seen below.

  • Onix
  • Starmie
  • Raichu
  • Tangela
  • Weezing
  • Alakazam
  • Arcanine
  • Nidoking

There is a ninth step of the research that we currently know very little about. The three tasks trainers will need to complete have not been revealed. However, the encounter at the end will be with a Mewtwo that knows Psystrike and is potentially shiny. It is definitely worth grinding that research for the next seven days in order to earn the encounter.

Pokémon GO will be holding three other throwback events in the weeks following this one, each celebrating a different Pokémon region from the past. Trainers who complete all nine research steps in all four events will unlock a special “Throwback Challenge Champion 2020” event starting on June 3, 2020. More details on that when they emerge!
