As the year begins promising a packed first quarter, Pokemon Legends: Arceus is the first big release of 2022 and sets in motion a string of non-stop blockbuster titles leading all the way into April. It’s also a major moment for the Pokemon series, being the first new entry from developer Game Freak since 2019’s Pokemon Sword and Shield, while also being the series’ first major attempt at an open-world setting. A lot is riding on the release of the game, which is set to arrive later this week. To excite fans further for the game, Nintendo has shared a new six-minute trailer.

Not much of Pokemon Legends: Arceus has been shown since its reveal back in February 2021. The game is set in an early version of the Sinnoh region from Diamond and Pearl known as the Hisui region, and tasks the player with forming the region’s first version of the Pokedex. Instead of tasking the player with the traditional goal of defeating all of the region’s gym leaders while catching all of its Pokemon, Legends: Arceus instead puts greater emphasis on the task of simply catching and researching Pokemon. In fact, not much of the game’s turn-based combat has been shown at all until this latest trailer.

As the trailer demonstrates, battles in Pokemon Legends: Arceus will consist of players dwindling down the wild creature’s health enough to catch it, or bosses similar but not entirely comparable to gym battles. The bulk of the game looks to be spent researching the wild monsters and learning their habits before attempting to catch them, similar to something like Monster Hunter, just without the murder. As many have noted, a lot of Pokemon Legends: Arceus’ elements seem to be inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, such as the camping system and environmental design of the world, with certain terrain indicating which Pokemon are present and weather conditions influencing how they will interact with the world.

There’s a lot more unpacked in the trailer, such as character customization, teases for the game’s story, the introduction of Special Pokemon, and more. These elements might want to be avoided by fans looking to go in spoiler-free, however, as many parts of the game have now been spoiled in certain communities online due to the game leaking a few weeks ago. As the game gears up for release, spoilers are sure to increase, with review embargoes likely to lift in the coming days. The latest trailer does give a highly detailed overview at all of the game’s major elements for those still on the fence or new to the Pokemon series.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus releases January 28 exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
