Pokémon Sword & Shield Why Is Everyone So Obsessed With Shiny Pokémon

Earlier this week, a data miner discovered that there are two types of Shiny Pokémon that players may encounter in Pokémon Sword & Shield. This, of course, is huge news for fans who play Pokémon games and aim to collect every single Shiny Pokémon, as it essentially means they will have to try harder in order to get both versions of Shiny Pokémon. However, many are asking what’s so special and unique about Shiny Pokémon and why players lose their minds every time they encounter one.

First off, it’s important to remember that Shiny Pokémon do not have any special stats or special attacks. If one is lucky to come across a Shiny Pokémon, that Pokémon will not have anything unique about it aside from its physical appearance. So now, the question becomes, why should players bother spending so much time trying to catching Shiny Pokémon. Well, the answer to that is quite simple: Shinies are extremely rare.

The Chances Of Catching A Shiny

Statistically speaking, the probability of encountering a Shiny Pokémon is 1 in every 8192, with a probability of 0.00012207031% during each encounter. With the debut of Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 (and onward), the chances of encountering a Shiny Pokémon was further increased if the player had the Shiny Charm in their possession. The Shiny Charm itself would increase the probability to roughly 1 in every 2731, thus tripling one’s chances.

Shiny Pokémon are a big deal to most (if not all) players because of how rare they are. Their rarity and elusiveness is what makes them so coveted within the Pokémon community. It also explains why Shiny Hunters – players who spend hours hunting for Shiny Pokémon – dedicate so much of their time looking to collect every Shiny. It’s similar to people who are obsessed with comic books. Sure, there may be multiple comic books about a particular superhero, but the first ones ever created or the ones that are limited edition are extremely rare and expensive. In other words, everyone wants one in their possession

Two Types Of Shiny Pokémon

As we mentioned earlier, Pokémon Sword & Shield introduced two new types of Shiny Pokémon. Simply put, players are able to encounter either a Shiny Pokémon with a square sparkle or star sparkle effect. The square sparkle appears around Pokémon that can be encountered in the wild, while the star sparkle appears around those that can be encountered in any other way (mostly via breeding). However, it’s possible for the sparkle effects to be reversed, meaning that there is the possibility of encountering a Shiny Pokémon with a star sparkle effect while in the wild.

No other Pokémon games have ever included anything like this before. Although older Pokémon games had their own take on Shiny Pokémon, such as golden names appearing in the Pokédex or a star showing up next to their names, the effects were all the same – different colored aesthetic and a sparkle. In Pokémon Sword & Shield, though, the effects are split into two, thus doubling the amount of Shiny Pokémon one can catch in the games.

As one may have imagined by now, the Pokémon Sword & Shield subreddit is full of trainers showing off some of their Shiny Pokémon. There are posts showcasing Shiny Starter and version exclusive Pokémon, lucky Shiny encounters, accidental Shiny encounters, and many more. Of course, as time goes on, more and more posts will pop up showing players coming across Shiny Pokémon, as well as reaction videos of streamers getting a Shiny Pokémon.

With Pokémon Sword & Shield introducing Shiny Pokémon in a whole new way, saying that Shiny Hunters will be busy in the months ahead would be an understatement. Even if players who aren’t Shiny Hunters manage to come across a Shiny Pokémon, it would be in their interest to catch it since, truth be told, an opportunity like that is extremely rare.
