Pokemon That Would be Great for the Unite Roster

Pokemon Unite is the latest game released for the Pokemon franchise, developed by a Tencent Games subsidiary called TiMi Studio Group. Pokemon Unite is a free-to-play Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) similar to League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, Dota 2, and others. In Pokemon Unite, players select a Pokemon from the available roster and team up with four other players or friends to square off against an opposing team of five. The goal is to bank more points than the opponent by the end of the game, with a player’s Pokemon earning experience points and learning new moves as Pokemon are defeated.

In Pokemon Unite, a Pokemon’s capabilities are determined by their role, and balanced team composition is key for victory. Pokemon like Charizard and Lucario fall into the All-Rounder category, while Snorlax and Slowbro would fall into the Defender category, giving players an idea of how they will be played. Pokemon has one of the largest rosters of all time, so for TiMi Studio Group to choose the initial roster with only around 20 seems like a daunting task. It should go without saying that over the course of Pokemon Unite’s lifetime, more Pokemon will be added, and there are some interesting Pokemon with unique capabilities.

Attacker

  • Marowak
  • Scizor
  • Blaziken
  • Bisharp

In Pokemon Unite the role of the Attacker is to dish out damage. Pikachu, Venasaur, and Cinderace all fall under this category and are more than capable of doing the job. Marowak would make a great addition to this role, as they are one of few Pokemon to wield a weapon. Marowak would be able to go on the offense up close and personal or use their signature move Bonemerang to get that reach. On top of this Marowak also has an Alolan form which has a different look and set of moves. Scizor not only looks the part but also has the capability to dish out a lot of damage, and it would also be one of two Bug Pokemon available alongside Crustle.

Pokemon Unite features two bird Pokemon in Cramorant and Talonflame, but Blaziken being half chicken, half kicking machine would make an excellent addition. Attacks like Flare Blitz and Blaze Kick would make Blaziken a good gap closer and hard hitter, not to mention the ability to use the adorable Torchic before it evolves. Bisharp would be a great choice not only to round out the Steel-type more, but its look is also quite unique. Pokemon Unite features Holowear, an option to equip skins to a player’s Pokemon, and Bisharp would look quite sharp in some new threads given its a humanoid Pokemon.

Speedster

Pokemon That Would be Great for the Unite Roster

  • Arbok
  • Electrode
  • Zebstrika
  • Hawlucha

Pokemon Unite’s Speedster role is mainly for those Pokemon who may not be the most powerful, but are certainly the fastest. The Speedster role utilizes Pokemon with high speed to attack and score quickly. Pokemon like Talonflame and Absol fall under this role. Arbok, being a large snake, would naturally be quick to slither through Pokemon Unite’s battlefield. Along with its speedy mobility, it can also attack quickly with poisonous attacks, scaring away potential foes who try to stop a player’s teammates from scoring.

Pokemon Unite features many Pokemon who are humanoid, but it would be interesting to see more varied shapes like Electrode. Being one of the fastest Pokemon around, Electrode should be able to move about the battlefield with ease, zapping its foes. Another possibility could see Electrode lie in wait until the enemy team moves in close, unaware Electrode is about to explode. Zebstrika is another quick Electric-type Pokemon that could zip around the battlefield quickly, and with its striking appearance, its Holowear options could get very creative. Hawlucha would be another who would benefit greatly from Holowear, something in the ballpark similar to Pikachu Libre.

All-Rounder

Pokemon That Would be Great for the Unite Roster

  • Nidoqueen
  • Nidoking
  • Tyrantrum
  • Silvally

The All-Rounder role in Pokemon Unite is left for those Pokemon who can do a little bit of everything. Pokemon in this role such as Charizard and Garchomp can dish out a strong offense while being tanky in their own right. Nidoqueen and Nidoking would make great additions to this role, and as they are part of the same family, Pokemon Unite could get creative by giving them some synergistic capabilities if both are on the same team. Being a queen and king, the Holowear possibilities are quite obvious, as they could easily pull off the queen and king look with a matching crown and robe.

Tyrantrum is a dinosaur with strong offensive and defensive capabilities. Pokemon Unite could certainly use more dinosaurs, and Tyrantrum would be a great fit as the closest to the iconic Tyrannosaurus Rex. With powerful moves like Head Smash and Crunch, Tyrantrum would be a great addition to the All-Rounder category. Silvally is a unique Pokemon in that it has all the same base stat values, making it an All-Rounder in the mainline Pokemon games. Being the only quadruped in the All-Rounder category would certainly make it a niche choice, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be able to hang with the others.

Defender

Pokemon That Would be Great for the Unite Roster

  • Sudowoodo
  • Conkeldurr
  • Cofagrigus
  • Turtonator

The Defender role in Pokemon Unite is very much like the Tank role in other games, meaning the player is expected to distract the opposing team and soak up as much damage as they can. Currently, there are only three Defender Pokemon: Snorlax, Slowbro, and Crustle, which means there are bound to be more additions. Sudowoodo would make an interesting choice, as it’s not made of wood but instead is a Rock-type Pokemon pretending to be a tree. Perhaps its desire to be a tree could be reflected in its abilities in Pokemon Unite, such as blending in with the grass making it invisible to the opponents.

Conkeldurr is an intimidating Pokemon with very high attack, though it is seen holding two large concrete pillars that it could use to barricade or block the opponents. Conkeldurr would probably make a great Attacker or All-Rounder, but its unique ability to use concrete could prove that it would be great as a Defender for its allies. Cofagrigus would make an exceptional Defender due to its incredibly high defense stat, not to mention its multiple arms and supportive moves. Turtonator is another Pokemon with high defense in the mainline Pokemon games. With its highly volatile shell, the only non-legendary Fire and Dragon-type Pokemon Turtonator would be a force to be reckoned with.

Support

  • Sigilyph
  • Slurpuff
  • Alcremie
  • Blissey

Much like the Defender role in Pokemon Unite, the Support role also only has three Pokemon: Eldegoss, Wigglytuff, and Mr. Mime. The Support role is mainly for Pokemon who can heal or protect their teammates, or inflict status ailments on the opposing team. Sigilyph would be a fun Support Pokemon using moves such as Tailwind to increase the speed of its teammates, while also slowing down the opponents who run in the opposite direction. Moves to increase a team’s defense such as Reflect and Light Screen would be useful in a team fight.

Slurpuff is based on the meringue dessert, and is a Fairy-type Pokemon with many supporting moves. Slurpuff has the capability to slow down opponents, lower their stats, and cure its own status ailments. This could be tweaked so Slurpuff can utilize its support moves for its teammates as well, making it a great option. Alcremie is similar to Slurpuff in that it is based on dessert, though depending on how Alcremie evolves, its look changes entirely. Its moveset can also slow down the opponent while healing itself. Speaking of healing, no support role would be complete without Blissey. Given its healing capabilities, it’s a wonder why Blissey wasn’t included in Pokemon Unite’s roster yet.

Pokemon Unite could certainly ignore the Pokemon here and opt for others for their capabilities or popularity. Pokemon like Ditto could be a great addition due to its unique nature, able to copy the look and abilities of another Pokemon temporarily to trick the opponents. Tyrogue would also be an interesting choice, as its evolution is dependent on which of its stats is higher. A higher attack stat would evolve Tyrogue into Hitmonlee, whereas a higher defense stat would see Hitmonchan. If both stats are equal then Tyrogue evolves into Hitmontop. This means Tyrogue’s role as an Attacker, Defender, or All-Rounder would depend entirely on how it evolves, making for an incredibly dynamic Pokemon.

Pokemon Unite is currently available on Nintendo Switch and releases for iOS and Android devices in September.
