Rare says that it is “immensely pleased” to see Banjo-Kazooie on the Nintendo Switch.

Considering Banjo and Kazooie’s most recent gaming appearance was through Super Smash Bros. and that the pair haven’t had a new game since Nuts & Bolts back in 2008, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the bear and bird belong to Nintendo. However, Rare was purchased by Microsoft back in 2002, placing Banjo and Kazooie as Xbox characters.

Despite this, Nintendo and Xbox have worked together yet again to bring Banjo-Kazooie to Nintendo once more, this time featured as a game in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service. As reported by Nintendo Life, Rare commented on the duo returning to Nintendo and expressed how happy it was to work with Nintendo again.

In a blog post on its website, Rare said, “Whether you’ll forever carry your own blue sky memories of Treasure Trove Cove from 1998, or you’re a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player keen to dig into Banjo and Kazooie’s adventurous legacy, we hope the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack announcement back in September’s Nintendo Direct came as a welcome surprise… The question of classic Rare games resurfacing for a Switch audience is one that people have been asking for a long time, so we’re immensely pleased that we could work with Nintendo to bring the bear and bird to this platform.”

The blog post continues by confirming that the version of the game on the Nintendo Switch is the N64 version and not the Xbox remasters, “In the spirit of preserving the game exactly as it was alongside the other titles available, this version of Banjo-Kazooie is the Nintendo 64 original as you remember it. And if you grew up in a later console generation, well, we’re looking forward to a whole new wave of gamers getting turned into a washing machine by Mumbo Jumbo, scrambling away from Snacker the shark and facing Grunty’s Furnace Fun for the very first time.”

Alongside the arrival of Banjo-Kazooie on the Nintendo Switch, several Rare employees also took to Twitter to share art and celebrate the return of the duo to a Nintendo system.
