Some The Real Housewives of New York City cast members are accusing Bethenny Frankel of setting up the “It’s about Tom” moment. The scene is one of the show’s most iconic and finds Bethenny telling Luann de Lesseps that her soon-to-be husband, Tom D’Agostino, is out kissing women at the Regency Hotel. It goes down in Palm Beach, Florida, where the women are vacationing to celebrate Lu’s upcoming wedding. Bethenny gets a text message from a friend who claims she has evidence Tom is cheating on Luann.

Bethenny calls the countess into her room but not before grabbing a bottle of vodka — “I need a drink,” she claims — and then breaks the news to Lu, saying, “It’s about Tom.” Luann takes the news in stride although the whole situation is just the beginning of the end of her relationship with Tom, a reported serial cheater. Although it all seemed natural enough on the show, Bethenny’s former RHONY cast members are now accusing her of setting the moment up in a tell-all book.

In Not All Diamonds and Rosé: The Inside Story of the Real Housewives From the People Who Lived It by Dave Quinn, released on October 19, Ramona Singer and Carole Radziwell shade Bethenny for having orchestrated the whole moment, per ET. Carole says in the book, “It was a total setup. Bethenny knew this woman and found out that she was in contact with Tom. And Bethenny was like, ‘The next time you go to see him, text me.’ And that’s what happened.”

Carole adds, “Bethenny knew that they were going to this hotel, and she sent her friend or probably her assistant to take a picture. I mean, Bethenny doesn’t have a lot of friends — and she certainly didn’t just happen to have a friend at the Regency at 10 o’clock on a Tuesday night when Tom just happened to be there kissing some chick he used to bang.”

Ramona also claims that Bethenny “totally planned” the whole thing. “She knew what was going on and sent someone to photograph that,” Ramona says. She then dug in even further, adding, “And here’s how calculating Bethenny is. When she told Luann about Tom having a kissing moment with someone else, she was like, ‘Hold on, I need a drink. Give me that bottle’ — which happened to be a Skinnygirl drink. She wanted to make sure it was in the film.” Bethenny is, of course, the founder of the Skinnygirl lifestyle brand.

Housewives are always accusing each other of producing their own drama and for using the show as an outlet to hawk their businesses and brands. However, this particular claim by Carole and Ramona is pretty major if true. The “It’s about Tom” scene is one of RHONY’s most iconic. It’s also presented as though Bethenny is genuinely trying to help her friend out. One could assume Bethenny had Luann’s best interests at heart when she reportedly sent a friend to snap some pics of Tom dating other women while he was engaged. Even with this revelation from Bethenny’s former co-stars, that may still be the case. However, it certainly paints a more complex picture of the moment. One thing about Bethenny is she always knows how to make The Real Housewives of New York City must-watch TV. Even if the “It’s about Tom” moment was indeed planned, that hasn’t changed and won’t anytime soon.
