In a surprise move, Epic Games has decided that Rocket League will be removing the sale of all randomized loot boxes.

When Epic recently acquired the popular game, some players saw the move as little more than Epic flexing its wallet to acquire yet another title that wasn’t related to competitor Steam and complained about the negative changes that could be made. Conversely, this move is nothing but pro-consumer and is likely to be a big hit with players.

The announcement came in the form of a brief blog post from developer Psyonix, which stated that “a system that shows the exact items you’re buying in advance” will be replacing the current model of loot boxes. Previously, loot boxes could be purchased with a random item inside from a predetermined list of items, however, the item is not revealed until after the money has been spent and cannot be returned if consumers do not like what they were given. The move is similar to another decision made by Epic in Fortnite: Save The World, which is the paid PvE original counterpart to the popular Battle Royale mode.

Monetization of any game is necessary, but consumers are tiring of the same old thing and of developers seeking to squeeze every penny out of consumers. Worse still is the recent trend for AAA titles in a long-running series to be sold at a premium price, only for developers to add an obtrusive in-game store and remind players constantly that there is money to be spent to optimize their experience.

Mortal Kombat 11 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood are guilty of this, and companies like EA are perhaps the worst offenders with its controversial rollout of Star Wars Battlefront II. Even worse, it has recently argued through lawyers that loot boxes are “surprise mechanics” that players enjoy.

This move by Epic then feels like a step towards some much-needed pro-consumer behavior in the gaming industry, and it isn’t too surprising to see Epix paving the way. There is no doubt that Epic has been controversial as of late with its constant barrage of exclusivity deals and news that always seems to anger a select few into hysterics, but it also offers smaller indie organizations outstanding support and more revenue than competitors like Steam.

To remove loot boxes in favor of the Fortnite model, whereby consumers know exactly what they are purchasing, is another move that will likely improve upon player experience. Given the popularity of Rocket League and the prevalence of thematic skins offered in its various events, it will be interesting to see if this loot box removal has a positive change on their revenue, though they may not make that data public.
