Although many DC fans would love to see Shazam!’s titular character teaming up with Superman in a future DCEU movie, Billy Batson’s best crossover would be with Wonder Woman. Despite multiple obstacles, the DC Extended Universe has grown to the point where upcoming movies can adapt iconic storylines such as Flashpoint and introduce exciting characters like Hawkman and Doctor Fate. A movie where Shazam and Superman join forces to fight Black Adam seems like a no-brainer. Still, considering how the future of the DCEU is shaping up, it would be more fitting to see Zachary Levi’s Shazam partner up with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in the third installment of either of their trilogies.

Wonder Woman was part of the main foundations for Justice League. She came in contact with Superman and Batman as early as in her first appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was already a veteran hero by that point. Shazam’s origin story came much later after the Justice League was already formed, and instead of being a seasoned superhero, he was introduced as an immature boy who’s only beginning to test his powers. Wonder Woman and Shazam’s personalities might be polar opposites, but their shared origin is the basis for an ideal team-up.

Both Shazam and Wonder Woman are at the center of the DCEU’s ancient mythology. The first Wonder Woman movie featured Diana Prince leaving Themyscira for the first time to fight Ares, the god of war. Wonder Woman 1984 then saw Diana stop the catastrophic effects of a relic made by Dolus, the god of trickery. Shazam! first showed how Billy Batson received the powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, and now Shazam! Fury of the Gods is borrowing characters from Wonder Woman’s mythos for its main villains. With so much overlap in their live-action stories, it would be odd if Shazam and Wonder Woman never cross paths.

Superman is an unfortunate casualty of the DCEU’s change in direction. There are no signs of Kal-El’s return anytime soon, and if a new iteration of the Man of Steel does arrive within the next few years, he probably won’t team up with other established heroes as soon as he’s introduced. Even if Superman were to return, his abilities are far too similar to Shazam’s. A shared adventure between both powerhouses could feel too uniform — even more so if they fight Black Adam, who also possesses similar powers.

Wonder Woman is different enough from Shazam!’s star to allow for more dynamic interactions but still similar enough to provide a logical reason for their collaboration. Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will expand the DCEU’s ancient mythology. It’s only a matter of time before mythology-inspired characters team up (or fight each other) in an eventual crossover.
