Scattered around Shin Megami Tensei 5’s desolate world of Da’at are treasures innumerable. Hidden caches full of gubbins, tiny demons laced with Glory, and titanic petrified demons from an age long past. Some treasures are hidden in plain sight – but these are often defended by Punishing Foes.

Giant mockeries of what a demon normally represents, these enemies are not for the faint of heart. Most, if not all, are capable of killing you when first met and avoidance is the best strategy. They aren’t immortal, however, and killing them is often rewarded handsomely.

What Are Punishing Foes

Punishing foes, like all demons, wander the various areas of Da’at – Minato, Shinagawa, Chiyoda, and Taito. Unlike a regular demon, however, Punishing Foes are significantly stronger. Often coming with an inflated level, as well as bonuses to their stats, Punishing Foes act as optional mini-bosses that roam the world.

You can spot a Punishing Foe simply by looking at the size of the demon approaching you. Punishing Foes are significantly larger than their ilk, and this is also represented on your mini-map. What’s more, once you’ve seen a Punishing Foe up close, they are marked on your map for ease of tracking later. Often much later.

Some Punishing Foes are linked to Side Quests and won’t appear on your map. These enemies are usually signposted by the game when you approach. This also means some Punishing Foes are not unlocked until you progress the main story far enough, or complete a chain of prerequisite Side Quests.

Reward For Defeating Punishing Foes

Punishing Foes, like a standard boss, tend to grant large chunks of EXP. Defeating them at the intended time (around mid-game for most) will reap the most benefits. Many Punishing Foes are linked to Side Quests too, so killing them often nets you Quest Exp, Essences, Special Fusions, and Talismans.

Quick note, you can’t communicate with a Punishing Foe like a regular demon. This means you can’t convince them to join your ranks. You can, however, run away from them – unlike a regular boss.
