Hulu’s Shrill is a comedy series that revolves around the life of Annie Easton, a young aspiring journalist who wants to turn her messy, unfulfilling life around. She is dating Ryan, an unreliable slacker of a boyfriend who she would be better off without and she also has to deal with the fact that her father has cancer. Her best friend Fran seems to be the only person that is there for her no matter what. The series comments on expectations that society has towards women. Annie is overweight and strives to not let societal expectations about women’s body shapes bring her down. The show is both funny and sad as well as inspirational and cringey at times.

If there is one message that Shrill gets across brilliantly, it’s that women’s self-worth should not be based on what size they are. Annie’s fashion sense is out of this world. Her outfits are always on point, ranging from casual to edgy cocktail dresses.

10 Best: Little Black Dress

A long sleeve tee and a little black dress over it is an amazing look to rock in the fall months. Annie rarely resorts to looking this casual, but it looks good on her. When she dresses up, she usually also wears lipstick, but she is wearing none with her ’90s inspired look.

To Annie, this is probably the most casual she will leave the house, apart from t-shirts that she wears in her spare time. Her go-to style is typically way more colorful and it draws more attention.

9 Worst: ’70s Inspired Floral Dress

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

In this yellow floral dress, Annie is channeling some serious That ’70s Show vibes. Unfortunately, it is not one of the best representatives of the decade. Just like Jackie sometimes completely missed the mark, so did Annie in this instance. It’s especially her see-through sleeves that make this outfit one of the worst in the show’s history.

Even though the outfit is not the best, it was a perfect fit for Ruthie’s roller skating party. It just goes to show that Annie understands personal style better than any other person on Shrill.

8 Best: Dazzling Party Dress

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

In the third episode of the first season, Annie went to an art exhibition and got stood up by her disappointing boyfriend. On top of it all, certain people think that she made Ryan up and that there is no way Annie would be dating anyone. She takes it all in stride, though, and later on confronts Ryan who is busy partying somewhere else.

In a glittery party dress, Annie stood out both at the exhibition as well as at Ryan’s house party. It sends a loud and proud message that beautifully complements Annie’s personality: she is not other people’s doormat like Betty Suarez from Ugly Betty was. Betty sometimes dressed as a quiet church mouse, but Annie never does.

7 Worst: Her Safe, But Boring Pool Party Outfit

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

Annie pitched an idea to have a “Fat Babe Pool Party”, but her boss Gabe turns the idea down as he feels no compassion towards over-sized people, Annie included. That luckily didn’t discourage Annie to join her bestie Fran to attend. Fran wanted to go because her romantic interest Vic threw the party. Walking side by side with Fran whose outfit is absolutely stunning, Annie’s bland blue t-shirt and black pants fade into nothing in comparison. On the party, Annie reveals her frustrations regarding constantly trying to overcome her weight problems rather than just embracing them. “You know? I’m fat!”, she proclaims and the statement remains one of the best quotes from season 1.

The ladies at the said party are wearing colorful, fun and versatile swimsuits. Then there are also floral kimonos and animal prints. Later on, Annie takes off her clothes and jumps in the pool. Her multi-colored swimsuit definitely looks better on her than a safe, predictable blue t-shirt.

6 Best: Looking Dashing In White

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

Shrill received raving reviews because it shows all the plights of plus-size women: low self-confidence, chronic dissatisfaction with your body and being misunderstood by most people. Consequently, they often dress vaguely, trying to hide their body shape and size. But not Annie. She might be insecure inside, but she dresses to impress.

Chubby women often wear black clothes, as they were told all their lives that that will make them look thinner. White has always been proclaimed as a no-no, since it is said to not be flattering. Says who? Annie served one of her best looks when she wore this white floral dress.

5 Worst: Casual T-Shirt

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

We were loving Annie’s attitude in the second episode of season 1 when she takes a walk with her mother. Thinking she knows what’s best for her daughter, Julia encourages Annie to exercise regularly, since it isn’t that hard. Annie confronts her right away, asking her to consider her feelings with forcing comments like that down her throat.

Annie’s striped t-shirt is by no means awful, but it is one of the most casual looks we see Annie rock on the show. Otherwise, Annie never has messy hair nor does she wear regular clothes. Her outfits are generally on the spot and outstanding. Naturally, her exercising outfit is not her finest.

4 Best: The Purple Dress With Polka Dots

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

Despite all the red flags and sneaking around, Annie invites Ryan to join her and her parents at a dinner. She is dressed in a purple dress with embroidered dots. Since there are many similar dresses on the market, this is one of the looks that is the easiest to emulate in real life.

Annie always wears her hair down in the same fashion, which is a real shame in this instance. If she wore her hair up, the stunning dress would pop out even more.

3 Worst: Plaid Dresses Aren’t Hot Right Now

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

It has been established that Annie looks best in bold prints, vibrant colors and floral prints. That’s why this blue and green plaid dress is not among the best looks in the show. The grunge look doesn’t fit with Annie’s personality. She is not moody, melancholic or indifferent. The shades of blue and green are calming, but Annie is by no means a mellow person.

According to Vulture, the show’s costume designer Amanda Needham had to make certain looks out of scratch. It is as if expression of self through fashion disappears once we reach a certain size. Even in this plaid dress, Annie looks amazing.

2 Best: Annie Looks Fierce In Red

Shrill Annie’s 5 Best Outfits (& 5 Worst)

Annie can really pull off floral patterns, but this red dress might just take the cake. The way she looks in this dress kind of reminds us of Jess from New Girl, another female icon. Her bag is also a statement in itself. The shoes, however, are not exactly among the best in Annie’s closet. They resemble the Dutch clogs and the color also doesn’t match the rest of the outfit.

This outfit describes Annie’s fashion style in a nutshell: she loves to mix the retro aesthetic with modern influences. The more confident she gets, the more eye-catching her looks. This red dress accentuates her feminine features. Hopefully, the show will inspire countless women to dare to stand out of the crowd.

1 Worst: The Season 1 Finale Look

Season 1 finale is spectacular. Annie finally musters up the courage to call her boss Gabe out. He constantly looks down on Annie and reduces her to her weight. Annie tries to make him understand his own ignorance. After all, he is a gay man and he probably doesn’t like being defined merely by his sexuality. It’s all for nothing, though. Annie quits and walks away.

In this episode, Annie is wearing a dress with pink stripes. It suits her well, but unfortunately, she looks as if she sells candy rather than writes amazing journalistic articles.
