SpiderMan No Way Home Trailer Breaks Avengers Endgames Viewing Record

The first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home beats the viewership record of fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe title Avengers: Endgame. The 2019 chapter in the MCU served as the finale of the Infinity Saga as the surviving members of the Avengers look for a way to reverse the effects of Thanos’ devastating snap in Avengers: Infinity War and bring back the half of civilization lost. Avengers: Endgame broke numerous records upon its release, grossing over $2.798 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of all-time, though was dethroned shortly after by James Cameron’s Avatar during pandemic re-releases.

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Tom Holland return as the titular webslinger in the wake of the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home in which the villainous Mysterio ousted his identity as Peter Parker to the world and framed him for his murder. Finding no other options to fix things, Parker turns to Dr. Stephen Strange for help by performing a spell to erase everyone’s memory of his secret identity. The spell goes awry, however, and Parker is forced to face off against villains from other universes, including Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin.

Following the trailer’s arrival on Monday, a new report from Deadline reveals that the first teaser for Spider-Man: No Way Home has set a new viewership record with over 355.5 million global views within its first 24 hours, beating out fellow MCU film Avengers: Endgame’s 289 million. The teaser trailer also more than doubled the 24-hour viewership of its predecessor, Spider-Man: Far From Home, which drew in 135 million views. Additionally, the video set a record for the largest 24-hour social media conversation volume of all-time with 4.5 million mentions, 2.91 million of which were domestic and beat out Avengers: Endgame’s 1.94 million.

Given the sheer level of anticipation surrounding the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise it has set some records already, though it does come as an interesting surprise to see it beat Avengers: Endgame. With the 2019 film acting as a full culmination of the 22 films before it and audiences still reeling from its jaw-dropping cliffhanger ending, audiences were eager to see what the next film would hold and how their favorite heroes would return. That being said, the numerous theories regarding No Way Home’s multiverse story and the possible appearances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their past Spider-Man roles saw many pressing for Sony and Marvel to release the trailer.

Additionally, with the trailer having leaked early through a poor-quality TikTok video and the studios being cagey about when it would properly release, buzz was at an all-time high for the first look at Spider-Man: No Way Home. As evidenced by the viewership records, their efforts have clearly paid off as audiences continue to revisit the trailer and hunt for any clues as to what the multiverse story will entail. Only time will tell which theories come to fruition and if this viewership success translates to box office records when the film arrives in theaters on December 17.
