Warning: SPOILERS for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #16

In Miles Morales: Spider-Man #16, the Brooklyn wall-crawler takes on a new responsibility: babysitting. Miles has a new baby sister, Billie, and despite his superhero duties, he’s fairly excited about being a big brother. When the siblings go for a stroll through the park, however, Miles’s secret identity must swing into action to face a typically dangerous Spider-Man situation.

Spider-Man’s legend, as upheld by Miles Morales, Peter Parker, and others, is traditionally defined by aunts and uncles. Across various timelines, he’s looked after his own children, clones, clingy fans, etc., but caregiving for an infant relative is a new kind of challenge for Miles. Billie Morales was born to Miles’s parents Rio Morales and Jefferson Davis just a few months ago (there’s no figuring exactly how she’ll age in comics time vs. real-world time, but it’s a safe to bet she’ll be a baby for a good while).

Miles Morales #16 comes from writer Saladin Ahmed with artists Cory Smith and Victor Olazaba, and opens with Billie and family doing perfectly normal baby stuff. Keen observers will note the Spider-Ham and Guardians of the Galaxy toys in Billie’s crib. Miles takes Billie for a stroll through Brooklyn which unexpectedly diverts to an underground rescue mission. With Billie secured in a web-sling carrier, Spider-Man enters the sewers to help a trapped citizen and confront an “extremely chonky” alligator. The rescued Brooklynite coins the name “Spider-Baby,” (not to be confused with the What If? character from Earth-23492), legitimizing Billie’s first appearance as Spider-Sidekick.

Upon returning home, Miles’s mother Rio is remarkably blasé about the web-fluid covering her infant daughter, but since Rio knows that Miles is also Spider-Man, it’s understood that she’s already adapted to extreme parenting situations. Spidey’s babysitting adventure does not skimp on the realistic parenting duties, either: Miles bottle-feeds Billie, changes her diaper, rocks her into naptime, and does whatever a big brother can.

The wisdom of web-swinging while babysitting is surely debatable, just as surely as the dilemma will arise again as Billie grows. In this issue, Miles succeeds in wrangling a wayward alligator, but what if next time the threat is a Rhino, a Scorpion? What will happen when Billie can walk, or indeed, crawl? But child-rearing anxieties aside, Spider-Baby Billie adds a new layer to the principled motivation that is Spider-Man’s distinctive power. Cute babies, like great powers, beget great responsibility. Or as Billie Morales might say, “Goo.”
