The world of SpongeBob SquarePants has many peculiarities, among those other sea creatures being used as pets. SpongeBob himself has a pet snail named Gary, who has a personality of his own and is even one of SpongeBob’s closest friends (along with Patrick, of course), but he’s not SpongeBob’s only pet. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants has been entertaining generations of kids and adults since 1999, and has become one of the longest-running American animated series.
SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character – a sea sponge that looks more like a kitchen sponge – and his friends from the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, such as Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks. Over the course of 12 seasons, viewers have met the most important people in SpongeBob’s life, like his parents and his pet Gary. The latter is a very special character: even though he only says “meow”, he’s a very intelligent being, and has helped SpongeBob many times. Gary has even been the star of a couple of episodes, such as “Dumped” and “Gary Takes a Bath”.
It’s not surprising, then, that Gary is regarded as SpongeBob’s one and only pet, but as it turns out, SpongeBob has two pets, and the other one is even quieter than Gary – and can be a bit difficult to spot.
SpongeBob’s Other Pet Animal Is A Scallop
SpongeBob has a pet scallop appropriately named Shelley. She’s small, lavender-colored (though she sometimes appears as white with a blue outline), and lives in a birdcage, hanging from the ceiling of SpongeBob’s bedroom. Shelley has appeared in a number of episodes, but she’s always part of the background decoration of the room. Her first appearance was in the pilot episode “Help Wanted”, which makes her the first female character to appear in SpongeBob SquarePants (Sandy Cheeks was introduced two episodes later in “Tea at the Treedome”, Mrs. Puff in “Boating School”, and Pearl in “Squeaky Boots”).
Shelley has never been directly addressed in any episode, and her name was revealed in the special feature “The Bikini Bottom’s Up Tour”, found in the series’ complete first season DVD. Shelley has been mostly animated as part of the background – for example, in “Help Wanted”, her cage moves when SpongeBob’s alarm goes off, and in “Unreal State”, he gets stuck in her cage after sneezing. In “Don’t Look Now”, Shelley is placed in SpongeBob’s bed, and in “New Digs”, he takes her with him when he moves into the Krusty Krab. Perhaps the biggest thing to happen to her was in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, where she was shown to have escaped during the Great Krabby Patty Famine.
Even though SpongeBob has taken her with him a couple of times, and has a framed photo of her on one wall (and one of Gary on the opposite wall), he often forgets about her. In “A Pal for Gary”, he wanted a pet to keep Gary company, even though they already have Shelley, and she even appears in the background. While there’s not much a small scallop like Shelley can do, it seems odd that she has never been directly addressed by her owner, and it’s unlikely that the writers of SpongeBob SquarePants will acknowledge her as more than background decoration in the upcoming season. Still, Shelley’s existence is a good piece of trivia, and fans of the series might want to pay closer attention next time they watch it.
