Found family, bloodlines, friendship, and character dynamics, in general, are hugely significant parts of what makes Star Wars such a widely beloved franchise. Not all relationships between the iconic characters are platonic, though, with love having its place in both the Skywalker saga and the extended canon, producing some famous, beloved, and divisive couples.
As is the Star Wars fandom’s nature, everybody has their subjective opinions on the couples introduced to the franchise. But, some fans almost universally recognize some couples are not meant to last; whether they are destined to end badly, quickly, or both, some relationships are doomed.
10 Jar-Jar Binks & Queen Julia
One of the most divisive characters in all of Star Wars never had his time in the franchise end with the prequel trilogy, with kid-favorite Jar Jar Binks having a role in The Clone Wars series, even getting a romance story.
It was, of course, one of the more unexpected love stories in the entire franchise between him and Queen Julia of Bardotta, who held a bright torch for the Gungan. Given Jar Jar’s small, mostly comedic role in the show and the fact Queen Julia had never been mentioned before or again, fans knew this romance was to be short-lived.
9 Anakin Skywalker & Padmé Amidala
Without a doubt, the most crucial romance in Star Wars is the love from across the stars between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, whose love story has been the source of so much criticism for its execution in the prequel trilogy.
Nevertheless, fans always knew watching the prequels and The Clone Wars that this was to end badly. After all, everyone knew what happened to Anakin, and Padmé was not around to watch Darth Vader strike fear in the heart of the Galaxy. In its story, it is a beautiful and tragic tale that was destined to end in pain.
8 Ahsoka Tano & Lux Bonteri
In her time thus far in canon, Ahsoka Tano has only ever had one love interest teased, and even though they never became an official item, fans knew from the get-go that she and Lux Bonteri could never be.
While Ahsoka ended up not being a Jedi, her romance with Bonteri still would never have worked with all of the immense responsibilities and priorities Ahsoka had, between the new fight against the Empire, hunting Thrawn and Ezra, and everything in between it was never going to be a happy ending for the young pair. Luckily fans never got to see a bad ending for them, just a case where it fizzled out.
7 Luke Skywalker & Leia Organa
The most famous siblings in all of Star Wars were initially teased as being a one-way romantic interest, with the young farm boy having a big crush on the beautiful princess. the two even shared an infamous kiss.
However, most fans could clearly see the true love story lay with Han and Leia, not Luke and Leia, which was made abundantly clear both before and after their kiss. The avenue of them being siblings rather than lovers was a smart way to go despite their kiss and Luke’s clear crush and confirmed what most fans knew; they were definitely not meant to be.
6 Asajj Ventress & Quinlan Vos
The only romance on this list not to take place on screen is that of Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos, two volatile, unpredictable Force users who fell in love in the unaired Clone Wars arc turned novel ‘Dark Disciple.’
Given Ventress’s absence from the canon beyond the Clone War and the nature of the ‘Dark Disciple’ story, fans were fairly sure the odd couple would have a sad end. This came after a lot of back and forth with the light and dark side at the hands of Dooku, whom the pair were tasked with hunting down.
5 Kanan Jarrus & Hera Syndulla
While Han and Leia are the most iconic couple in all of Star Wars, one couple who gives them a run for their money in terms of quality is Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla from Star Wars: Rebels.
It may be unfair to say that everyone thought they were doomed from the start; after all, Rebels did prove itself on multiple occasions to be lighthearted. However, if there was one big hero destined to die, it was always Kanan. Couple that with Hera’s unwavering dedication to the Rebel Alliance and the wider fight against the Empire, and the path Kanan was on, it seemed more than likely that this duo would be torn apart,
4 Finn & Rose Tico
From one fan-favorite romance to one of the most hated storylines in all of Star Wars, Finn and Rose Tico’s romance is undoubtedly one of the weaker aspects of Rian Johnson’s controversial yet overall masterfully done The Last Jedi.
The two just do not work, at least not in the context seen. Their story together was lackluster, the dialogue on Crait was iffy, and their kiss was straight-up awkward. Fans did not know how the two would not be together after The Last Jedi, but pretty much everyone knew that this romance would not be long-lasting. Most fans prefered that Finn be with someone he had more chemistry with like Poe or Rey and that Rose stood on her own two feet as a character.
3 Han Solo & Qi’ra
If there has ever been a couple in Star Wars who were both official and guaranteed to not be together in the end, it is Han Solo and Qi’ra, fellow scumrats of Corellia who were young and in love.
From the get-go, everybody understands the two will not be together because Han will end up with Leia; it’s that simple. But, even ignoring that the signs were there that the couple would have a bitter ending given Qi’ra’s time spent with the Crimson Dawn and the bitterness fans know Han has at the start of the original trilogy.
2 Ben Solo/Kylo Ren & Rey
Another divisive romance in Star Wars from the sequel trilogy is one that took a long, long time to reveal itself as romance officially but always had dedicated fans in the form of Reylo’s. Rey and Kylo Ren’s relationship is undoubtedly one of the most complex and brilliant parts of the sequels, in no short part to the actors’ performances, and the two’s shared screen time was so often the cause of some of the trilogy’s best scenes.
Nevertheless, the constantly teased romance was never meant to end well. As many fans could see, it was quite a toxic relationship, and even with a redeemed Ben, there would be an ickiness about them being a successful couple rather than just close friends.
1 Obi-Wan Kenobi & Satine Kryze
With perhaps the exception of Kanan and Hera, if there is any romance that is relatively healthy, beautiful, and heartbreaking, it is that between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Duchess Satine Kryze.
A pleasant surprise introduced to the canon through The Clone Wars, the respect between Satine and Kenobi is wonderful, and the way Maul uses Satine to get to everyone’s favorite Jedi is gut-wrenching. Due to all the movies and content that came before, as well as the boiling point level of tension Mandalore was at when we are introduced to Satine, all fans knew there would be no sailing off into the sunset for the two.
