Just when it seemed like the Disney era of Star Wars was unsalvageable and the fanbase was irreparably divided, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni came along with The Mandalorian, a show that perfectly captures the spirit of the saga and finds the right balance between the familiar and the fresh. Pretty much every Star Wars fan can agree that The Mandalorian is awesome.

The first season provided some hints about what happened in the 30-year gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Favreau has confirmed that the show will further explore the timeline gap in future seasons.

10 Rise Of The New Republic

In the five years between Return of the Jedi and The Mandalorian’s first season, the Rebel Alliance has been reorganized into the New Republic and they’ve begun governing and policing the galaxy.

The Mandalorian gave fans a hint of this in the episode “The Prisoner” when the extraction crew was attacked by former Rebel pilots flying X-wings. Subsequent seasons can build on this even more.

9 Yoda’s Force Ghost

When Luke Skywalker is exiled on Ahch-To in The Last Jedi, he occasionally chats to the Force ghost of Yoda. If Yoda’s Force ghost is hanging around during the three decades between the original and sequel trilogies, he could appear in The Mandalorian.

Surely Yoda would be interested in the presence of a child from his species that Imperial forces want to conduct tests on. Jon Favreau’s penchant for practical methods like puppetry would bode well, as would Frank Oz’s continued passion for the role.

8 Palpatine’s Return

In The Rise of Skywalker, when Palpatine returns, Poe says, “Somehow…Palpatine returned.” That’s the furthest extent the movie goes to in order to explain how he came back after being killed by Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. Non-movie materials have explained that Palpatine was cloned, and he had cloned kids, and one of those cloned kids had Rey.

None of it is very clear at all. The Mandalorian can dig into how Palpatine was brought back to life. Mando and the Child could even take a trip to Kamino where the Clone Army was created.

7 Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy

Luke Skywalker was training a new generation of Jedi before one of his students — his nephew, Ben Solo — got influenced by Snoke to turn to the dark side, kill all his classmates, and take off to lead the First Order.

Mando is looking after an incredibly powerful Force user. If he hears that Luke is trying to rebuild the Jedi Order, then he might seek him out for help.

6 Ochi Of Bestoon

In the hopes of keeping Rey out of the clutches of the Sith, her parents sold her to Unkar Plutt on Jakku. He’s the “quarter-portion” guy played by Simon Pegg in The Force Awakens.

After selling their daughter, Rey’s parents were killed by a Sith loyalist named Ochi of Bestoon. This character would be a perfect addition to the seedy world of The Mandalorian.

5 The Founding Of The Resistance

The newly reformed Senate lost faith in Leia Organa when her parentage was called into question, so she founded the Resistance to be able to work outside the restrictions of the New Republic.

Due to Carrie Fisher’s unfortunate passing, Leia won’t be able to appear in The Mandalorian, but the show can depict the founding of the Resistance in the background of its own story.

4 Poe Dameron’s History As A Spice Runner

One of the biggest influences that The Mandalorian has taken from the western genre is its focus on the criminal underbelly of a world with growing industry and government. Poe Dameron’s history as a spice runner was brushed over in a few seconds in The Rise of Skywalker.

Mando could bump into Poe and Zorii Bliss during this time and go on an adventure involving the spice trade. This could even conclude with an explanation of how Poe ended up leaving this life behind and joining the Resistance to fill in the gaps that the sequel trilogy failed to address.

3 Rinnrivin Di’s Cartel

Rinnrivin Di’s cartel rose to power after the Rebels killed Jabba the Hutt in the opening act of Return of the Jedi. Jabba’s death left a gaping hole in Tatooine’s criminal underworld and Kajain’sa’Nikto gang lord Rinnrivin Di seized the opportunity to take over.

When the First Order’s rise began, they worked with both the cartel and the Amaxine warriors to start building their navy ahead of taking down the New Republic.

2 Fall Of The New Republic

By the beginning of The Force Awakens, the New Republic has been reduced to the Resistance, another struggling rebel force, and the First Order has risen up and become even more powerful than the Empire ever was.

There’s a lot of ground to cover between the victory at the end of Return of the Jedi and the crushing defeat before the events of The Force Awakens.

1 Rise Of The First Order

At the beginning of The Force Awakens, the First Order is in full force. They have armies of Stormtroopers, their planet-sized superweapon is nearly complete, and they’ve got the galaxy living in fear. A few seasons into The Mandalorian, the show can begin to depict how the First Order started to rise up and take control of the galaxy from the New Republic.

The First Order’s Stormtroopers aren’t expendable clones like the Empire’s soldiers; they’re brainwashed orphans like Finn and Jannah. This aspect would be fascinating to explore further — because the sequels neglected to do so.
