Star Wars Confirms Palpatines TRUE Enemy is His Own Electricity

Star Wars has pretty much officially confirmed that Palpatine’s worst enemy is his own Force Lightning. “The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural,” Palpatine famously declared in both Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The Emperor has never been exactly creative when it comes to his use of the dark side. His favorite trick is Force Lightning, an offensive barrage of electricity that can critically wound people and disrupt electrical systems. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker saw the Emperor use this Force Lightning on a scale that had never been seen before, crippling the Resistance fleet. If not for Rey’s intervention, the Emperor would have single-handedly destroyed all opposition to his rule. And yet, strangely, on close examination, Force Lightning is actually Palpatine’s greatest weakness; literally every trilogy ends with him being blasted by it.

In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Mace Windu deflected the Force Lightning back at Palpatine using his lightsaber, leaving the Emperor disfigured for the rest of his life. Matt Stover’s novelization makes it clear that Palpatine would have died if not for the intervention of Anakin Skywalker. Years later, in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the Emperor’s lightning was turned against him in a similar way when Darth Vader pressed close to his Master, and Palpatine was caught up in the energy discharge. Finally, in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Emperor was at last destroyed when Rey copied Windu’s trick and deflected his Force Lightning back at him. This time, there was nobody to intervene and save Palpatine.

There’s a great deal of irony to this; the Emperor’s favorite power is in fact his greatest weakness. Of course, in theory, this is just typical George Lucas, given that he always insisted Star Wars should be like poetry, in that it rhymes. It has the effect of turning Palpatine into something of a fool, however. In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the Emperor is willing to risk potential defeat and even destruction in order to turn Anakin Skywalker; the novelization notes that Anakin is the Emperor’s “shatterpoint,” the fulcrum upon which his fate turns. Thus, that particular incident is a strategic move on the Emperor’s part. In Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, he’s simply losing his temper at Darth Vader’s betrayal, and potentially panics a little. But his continued barrage of Rey in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is absolutely bizarre, especially given how long the scene is drawn out.

Making matters worse, Star Wars has already confirmed that Palpatine could have repelled the Force Lightning at any time. In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Count Dooku attempted to use Force Lightning against Master Yoda. The aged Jedi Master effortlessly captured the Force Lightning in the palm of his hand, and blasted it back. Dooku deflected it with a wave of his hand. Given Dooku was the Sith Apprentice to Palpatine, it’s doubtful that he knew any dark side tricks his Master was not well aware of.
