Han Solo and Chewbacca are one of the most beloved duos in the Star Wars universe. They have a kind of man-and-his-dog relationship (or, technically, a man-and-his-Wookiee relationship), as their piloting of the Millennium Falcon was based on George Lucas’ dog Indiana sitting in the passenger seat when he was driving.

This stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder and walking carpet got up to some wild intergalactic antics over the years, from their burgeoning careers as space pirates to their nobler days fighting for the Rebel Alliance. So, here are Han and Chewie’s 10 best scenes in the Star Wars saga, ranked.

10 Han Pushes Chewie Into The Trash Compactor

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

When the Stormtroopers have Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie cornered on the Death Star, Leia makes a couple of wisecracks about how their attempts to save her have actually gotten her into even more danger. They figure out a way to escape as they find the chute that leads to the trash compactor.

Chewie is resistant to jump in, but since they’re under heavy blaster fire, Han tells him, “Get in there, you big furry oaf! I don’t care what you smell!” The great thing about Han and Chewie’s banter is that Han’s responses give us context on what Chewie said in his barely comprehensible language.

9 Ben Kenobi Hires Them To Help Him Save Princess Leia

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

After seeing the distress message that Princess Leia recorded onto R2-D2, Ben Kenobi took Luke Skywalker to the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Mos Eisley Spaceport in search of a liaison to take them to the Death Star for a daring rescue. In Mos Eisley Cantina, they meet Han Solo and Chewbacca, and make them a cash offer for the job.

From Han’s bragging about the unlikely capabilities of the Falcon to the duo’s negotiation of the price, this was the perfect way to introduce these iconic characters to the moviegoing public.

8 Han Tries Chewie’s Bowcaster Out For Size

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

During the Battle of Takodana, when the First Order brought its wrath to Maz Kanata’s castle, Han and Chewie joined in the fight, shooting Stormtroopers like the good ol’ days. Han’s signature weapon has always been his blaster, while Chewie’s has always been his bowcaster.

In the midst of this battle, Han decides to try Chewie’s bowcaster out for size, and finds that he likes the way it feels. To be fair, it was always a fun weapon to use in the Lego Star Wars video games.

7 Han Comforts Chewie Before Being Frozen

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

When Han is about to be frozen in carbonite at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, Chewie is devastated to see his roguish friend being taken away, and futilely tries to fight the Empire’s forces and save him.

But Han, in an unusually calm and collected manner, tells his Wookiee companion, “Save your strength. There’ll be another time. The princess. You have to take care of her.”

6 “Chewie, We’re Home.”

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

Every Star Wars fan in the world got goosebumps when they were watching the trailer for The Force Awakens, and Han and Chewie stepped onto the Millennium Falcon, all these years later. Han smiles and says, “Chewie…we’re home.”

Harrison Ford claims not to care about the impact of the Star Wars franchise and the significance of his character, but he plays this scene with such ingenuity that you have to wonder if that’s just an act.

5 The Medal-Giving Ceremony

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

Chewie isn’t actually given a medal during the ceremony at the end of the original 1977 Star Wars movie, and as a Marvel comic book explained, he was given his medal some time later and ended up gifting it to a girl named Zarro. For whatever reason, J.J. Abrams decided to throw in a fan service moment where Chewie is given an arbitrary medal in The Rise of Skywalker, apropos of nothing, confusing passive fans who didn’t know the context and causing dedicated fans who did to roll their eyes.

Anyway, Han gets a medal at the ceremony, alongside Luke, and Chewie is still there, being showered with praise. He even gets the final line of the movie.

4 Chewie’s Han-Avenging Killing Spree

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

After Kylo Ren kills his father, Han, in cold blood on Starkiller Base, Chewie is broken up. He instinctively starts shooting at Kylo Ren. Failing to kill him, he goes on a killing spree, shooting at all the nearby Stormtroopers instead.

Chewie’s friendship with Han goes back decades, and when Han is killed, we feel his devastation. If anything, Chewie’s emotional response makes Han’s death even more heartbreaking.

3 “Laugh It Up, Fuzzball!”

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

Chewie got a good kick out of Leia calling Han a “stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder” at the Rebels’ base on Hoth. If anything, Han was more offended by Chewie’s laughter than Leia’s insult and said, “Laugh it up, fuzzball!”

The writers of Family Guy used this quote as the title of their trilogy of Star Wars parody episodes — “Blue Harvest,” “Something Something Something Dark Side,” and “It’s a Trap!” — that hilariously lampooned the original trilogy.

2 Showing Up To Save Luke During The Death Star Attack

Star Wars Han & Chewies 10 Best Scenes Ranked

As the Rebels prepare for the Battle of Yavin, Han and Chewie simply collect their reward for saving Princess Leia and get ready to leave. Luke chastises them for not sticking around to join the fight, but they don’t like to take sides.

In the middle of the battle, they have a change of heart and return to the Death Star to shoot a couple of TIE fighters off of Luke’s tail. Showing up at the last second to do the right thing and help the Rebels achieve their victory was the perfect end to Han’s character arc in the original 1977 movie.

1 Chewie Hugs Han In Jabba’s Prison Cell

When Leia sneaks into Jabba’s palace to unfreeze Han, it seems like a perfectly executed scheme. However, Jabba and his goons have been watching the entire time and chuckle as Leia is taken to be Jabba’s bikini-clad sex slave and Han is taken to be locked in a grimy prison cell ahead of his sacrifice to the Sarlacc.

The cell is the same one where Chewbacca is being held. In spite of the grim fate that faces them, Chewie is just happy to see his friend again and gives Han a big hug.
