New Star Wars: The Last Jedi concept art shows storyboards from the film that features multicolored porgs. The film only began playing in theaters last night and yet already critics and fans seem divided over The Last Jedi, giving rise to lots of interesting discussions and debates. From the tonal choices made by director Rian Johnson to the surprising arcs that a number of characters have, The Last Jedi may prove to be the most divisive modern Star Wars film yet. However, even before the movie was in theaters, some fans were already in an uproar over one of its (literally) smaller elements: the porgs.
From the Ewoks to Jar Jar Binks, Star Wars fans are naturally wary of any cute creature that seems designed more to sell toys than to enhance the narrative. Of course, even George Lucas’ original vision for Star Wars was packed full of colorful characters and critters. As it turns out, The Last Jedi’s porgs were originally far more (again, literally) colorful than they appear in the actual film.

Yahoo has an exclusive look at The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which features commentary from writer Phil Szostak along with a variety of storyboards and concept art for the movie. Most exciting of all, at least for those who aren’t perturbed by porgs, are some colorful alternate takes of Ahch-To’s most vocal residents. You can check out those storyboards below:
The sampling of the new book features a couple of moments that were brought to life on screen, like Rose, Finn, and DJ sneaking around the First Order’s Dreadnought and Kylo’s ship landing in front of his army on Crait. It’s the concept art for the creatures of the film, however, that’s most intriguing.
There’s six different takes on the porgs, many of which feature vibrant colors in the bird-like creatures plumage. Ultimately, the palette of Ahch-To’s various inhabitants was kept in shades of white, gray, and brown, but the porgs could have bucked that trend if they followed some of the suggestions by artist Jake Lunt Davies. We also see the vulptices (aka the crystal foxes) almost had a darker hue themselves here, mirroring the shades of an oil slick or geode.
Split opinions over the film aside, The Last Jedi had a huge Thursday opening, second only to The Force Awakens. The Star Wars brand and near-universal praise from critics should translate into a monumental global box office opening for The Last Jedi too. It’s no wonder that Lucasfilm approved Johnson’s new trilogy without a story, as Star Wars: The Last Jedi is destined to be a huge success – porgs included.
