Action Comics writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson just confirmed that Warworld’s Mongul is not who Superman believes him to be. Johnson confirmed this at the Comic-Con@Home 2021 Superman panel, where he was asked about what’s coming next in Action Comics. Additionally, in the panel, Johnson touched upon how Superman is going to be seen in a much bigger frame than he’s been seen before during “Warworld Rising” and the proceeding “Warworld” arc.

In the recent pages of Action Comics, Mongul is referenced in a peculiar way that leads Superman to believe he has somehow changed. This occurs as Superman and his family attempt to talk to one of the new Kryptonian refugees from Warworld. That person is Thao-La, who was born and raised in captivity, despite being from an ancient breed of Kryptonians. Mongul is referred to as “Mongul-who-was” and “Mongul-who-is,” which heavily implies that Mongul has gone through some major changes. Along with this, Superman notes that the Warzoons speak of this Mongul with much more fear than the past one.

Now, Phillip Kennedy Johnson has confirmed that Mongul isn’t just an upgraded version of himself, but that Action Comics’ new Mongul is someone entirely different whom Superman has never met before. It’s great to get confirmation on Mongul’s identity, as it’s been heavily theorized about since Superman first brought up his idea of him being changed. This revelation suggests that Superman is completely in the dark as to the way that Mongul operates, in that he’s completely oblivious to their cycle of change. Has Superman been fighting different Monguls over the years, without even knowing?

Johnson states that his Mongul is inspired by Brian Michael Bendis’ Superman run, especially how Bendis set up Mongul to not be one singular figure, but a title. Much more will be explored in terms of how “each generation of Mongul takes power.” Whether it be through a natural birth cycle or a battle for the title, it’s clear that every new Mongul is better than their predecessor in some way. However, this Mongul is different and has surpassed any past iteration of Mongul, it seems. Johnson teases that he is much more threatening than all of his predecessors and that Superman isn’t ready for his wrath.

Ultimately, it’s exciting to see Action Comics delving into Mongul in a much bigger way than ever before. Alongside this, readers are going to be shown Warworld in a much more threatening light. Warworld will become a bigger and older part of DC’s universe. It can be interpreted that Johnson will be working in a lot more backstory into the two “Warworld” arcs. This will act as a way to establish just how extreme the threat that Superman faces truly is.
