As Survivor enters it’s 40th season with an all winners cast, there’s a lot of history that the show will be looking back on, and plenty between members of the cast itself. Winners At War is a landmark season. But there has been four all-returnee seasons before, and 12 overall seasons featuring returnees to some extent, so plenty of these winners have played together before. It’s worth going over the notable past examples and how they may bleed into season 40.
Nine winners in the cast have no crossover with any others, but the other half has a fair amount. May as well start with Boston Rob, given that this will be his fifth time playing; more times than anyone else. That many outings have given Rob allies from the jump. First and foremost, there’s his wife Amber, who he met on All-Stars and got to the final two with. Not a stretch to say that will be a strong connection in the game no matter what. Past that, there’s Tyson and Sandra, who he was aligned with in Heroes vs. Villains, and Sandra he also just spent time with as part of the theme for season 39.
Even with Rob’s enemies from past seasons, it’s tough to see them biting him in the butt early. Parvati and him seem to be on good terms after season 20, and though Ethan Zohn was someone who Rob trashed every chance he could in All Stars, Ethan doesn’t have any other connection besides him and Amber from that season. Having won season 3, Ethan is so far removed from new school players that it’s easy to see him linking up with Rob and, strangely enough, Ethan’s ex-girlfriend Amber, simply due to them originating from older seasons. Rob is set up well, and that’s something to watch out for.
Sandra and Parvati are the other most recognizable faces here, and they both have a notable relationship with each other and one other person. These two got to the end together in Heroes vs. Villains, where Sandra ultimately beat Parvati in a 6-3 vote, but there has never seemed to be any bad blood since that point. Instead, mostly mutual respect. Plus they both know they’re big targets even on a cast this great. The other person Sandra has history with is Tony. They butted heads early on in Game Changers, where Sandra won that battle. This is the one past conflict that could very easily reignite. They’re starting on the same tribe again, they’re still both huge personalities, all it takes is for them to be against each other at one point and then it may never end until one of them is out. On Parvati’s side, her unique connection is to Yul Kwon, the winner of the season Parvati played first but generally isn’t remembered for. Their relationship in Cook Islands is fairly hard to pin down, and that’s why it’s one of the more interesting ones to think about heading into Winners At War. It’s another one where there was always mutual respect, but they were never aligned to any extent, Yul was a major reason why Parvati went home, and Parvati wasn’t one of the votes that gave Yul the win. Also much like Ethan, it’s worth thinking about how Yul has been far removed from Survivor as a whole until now, so he might grab onto the one person he played with already. It could go many different ways.
One final particularly strong bond is between Jeremy and Natalie, who played together in San Juan Del Sur when Natalie won, prior to Jeremy returning and winning Cambodia. They were a tight duo in that season, with Natalie even dubbing Jeremy an “honorary twinnie” after her twin Nadiya was eliminated. The post merge of her game was largely based around getting revenge on the people who voted Jeremy out. The two of them are starting on the same tribe this season, and there’s little doubt they’ll link back up.
All of that is a quick recap of the history between these winners who will be playing together once again. Specifically it’s what will likely have an impact on how the season plays out in some way. Any other overlapping is seemingly minor and shouldn’t have a shadow that looms over Survivor’s 40th season quite the way that a past season rivalry or a 14-year-long marriage would.
