Character development is a crucial aspect of any television series, and Teen Wolf does an excellent job at fleshing out the members of the McCall Pack. For an arc to be successful, the character must become a noticeably different person than they were at the beginning of the show.

Teen Wolf manages its time well, and despite the large ensemble that forms, everyone in the main cast has a chance to evolve. Each season focuses on different plotlines regarding the characters, relationships, and overall story. Because of the way the show is structured, different characters stand out at different times.

7 Season 1: Scott McCall

Teen Wolf The Best Character In Each Season

The entire show is intended to be Scott’s story, but he’s focused on most heavily during the first season. Scott eventually becomes wise beyond his years, but he acts like a typical teenager in Teen Wolf Season 1. While empathy and compassion are clearly characteristics that Scott inherently has, his transformation brings these traits out.

Becoming a werewolf changes Scott’s life, and he learns something different about himself during each episode. Scott is pushed to his limits, yet the life and death experiences help Scott discover who he is at his core.

6 Season 2: Allison Argent

Teen Wolf The Best Character In Each Season

She may not be the most likable character in Teen Wolf Season 2, but Allison Argent is, without a doubt, the most interesting. Allison is unrecognizable from the warm and soft-spoken teenager viewers meet in the pilot, and she becomes power-hungry and cruel. Hunting werewolves is in her blood, and the Argents are pros at manipulating their family.

The events of the first season leave Allison feeling vulnerable, and she’ll do whatever it takes to feel like she’s in control. She improves her skills and even takes lethal risks in order to show them off. There reaches a point when Allison’s loyalty is to Gerard, rather than Scott and Stiles, making her story the most invigorating.

5 Season 3: Stiles Stilinski

Stiles’s energy causes him to stand out regardless of the season, yet he shines especially bright in Teen Wolf Season 3. He displays obvious signs of maturity and begins to act more like an adult than a teenager. Despite being previously portrayed as the sidekick, Stiles takes on a leadership role in Teen Wolf and starts making his own calls. Stiles steps into a puddle of gasoline alongside Scott in Season 3 Episode 6, “Motel California,” establishing that they’re in this life together.

The latter half of the season takes a dire turn and leaves Stiles more vulnerable than ever before. He’s put through the wringer—both physically and emotionally—and becomes trapped inside his own body. Stiles being possessed by the nogistune is the darkest storyline of the series, yet Dylan O’Brien’s portrayal of “void” Stiles makes it a fan favorite.

4 Season 4: Derek Hale

Although Derek isn’t a main cast member after Teen Wolf Season 4, he couldn’t have been given a better conclusion. He comes a long way from a power-hungry alpha, and Derek’s ending leaves nothing up to interpretation. Derek is burdened by the mistakes of his past, and while the audience knows he’s a changed man, Derek has trouble believing it.

He carries one of the most intriguing stories when he’s taken to Mexico and turned into a teenager by Kate Argent. Derek relives the traumatic experiences of his adolescence, but by the end of the season, he’s reborn. His evolution into a full wolf is physical proof that Derek should be proud of who he’s become.

3 Season 5: Lydia Martin

After watching the season opener, viewers are left with an endless amount of questions. With no context whatsoever, Lydia combines never-before-seen fighting skills with her banshee powers and attempts to break out of Eichen House.

More information is given as the story unravels, with everything leading to how Lydia ends up at the institution in the first place. She spends the season developing her abilities in a new capacity and learns self-defense skills that could easily compete with Allison’s. Lydia carries a crucial plotline, and the highest-rated episode of Teen Wolf Season 5 is dedicated to rescuing her from Eichen.

2 Season 6, Part One: Lydia Martin

Teen Wolf The Best Character In Each Season

Because Teen Wolf Season 6 Parts One and Two are so different, it’s impossible to evaluate them the same. They cover separate storylines and the main cast experiences a major altercation. Lydia is the standout of the first bulk of episodes, as fans get insight into feelings that have been previously ignored. In order to keep their relationship an ongoing question mark, Stiles’s love for Lydia has always been more prominent. Yet, Stiles and Lydia epitomize the slow burn trope in Teen Wolf, and Lydia’s heart is finally stripped bare.

Although romance is a major part of her storyline, Lydia is the easiest to connect to in all aspects. She’s the only person who believes Stiles is real and is treated as though she’s lost her mind. Lydia breaks down when others question her, yet she never stops believing what she knows is true. Lydia’s assurance in both herself and her love for Stiles exemplifies how far she’s come from Teen Wolf Season 1.

1 Season 6, Part Two: Scott McCall

It’s only fitting that the last ten episodes of Teen Wolf come back around to Scott. It’s his story at the beginning, so it should be his story at the end. As a whole, the sixth season isn’t the best due to the cast shake-up. Stiles is away at George Washington University, and the secondary characters steal the spotlight from the ones viewers are most attached to.

However, Scott and Malia become the main romance, which is similar to how Scott’s relationship with Allison is structured in Teen Wolf Season 1. Seeing Scott without Stiles doesn’t sit quite right, but it does give Scott more of an opportunity to shine. While there will always be times when he needs his best friend, Scott has become equipped to handle things on his own. The series finale flash-forwards into the future, and Scott tells his story to a new beta. It’s a full-circle moment meant to remind viewers that Scott is the focal point of the show.
