DC releases two new The Batman posters ahead of a new trailer premiere at DC FanDome 2021. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and Zoë Kravitz as Selena Kyle/Catwoman. Rounding out the cast are Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. The Batman focuses on a younger version of the character who’s just getting started as a superhero.

Though the film has been delayed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DC is ramping up its marketing campaign now that filming is complete. Recently, they’ve teased Pattinson’s Batman voice (which was met with a very positive reception from fans) and released several new LEGO sets, complete with the first look at Alfred’s costume, which hasn’t been seen in any of the trailers or posters so far.

Now, two new posters for The Batman show off Pattinson’s menacing form and highlight a classic Riddler costume detail. The few glimpses DC has provided of Dano’s Riddler have shown a more utilitarian costume design, but the new poster clearly shows a question mark on his jacket, a nod to one of the Riddler’s signature motifs.

The Batman Movie Posters Reveal Question Mark On Riddler’s Costume

In the comics, the Riddler is generally presented as one of the zanier villains in Batman’s rogues’ gallery. His costume — usually adorned with at least one question mark but frequently featuring an all-over repeating pattern of the symbol — is bright green with purple accents. Jim Carrey’s live-action portrayal in 1995’s Batman Forever even featured outlandishly red hair. So Dano’s take on the Riddler, who wears military surplus gear and communicates in threatening riddles and codes that are reminiscent of the Zodiac Killer, doesn’t have much in common with the classic depiction of the character.

The new poster highlighting the question mark on the Riddler’s costume is a nice nod to his comic book roots, especially given the significant changes to his character. While The Batman’s take on the Riddler is exciting and breathes new life into the character, it’s good to acknowledge his most recognizable visual detail, too. Even a small detail like this one clues viewers in to the fact that they’ve seen this character before in other media — and, at the same time, highlights how much he’s changed. The question mark signifies that, yes, this is the Riddler, but its singularity, starkness, and crudely drawn lines also hint that this version isn’t like the others.
