The Dark Knight Rises might have a reference to Batman and Catwoman’s daughter from the comics, and it’s a very subtle hint. The Caped Crusader has an interesting history on the big screen and has been played by seven different actors, including Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but one that became an instant favorite – and is considered by many as the best version of the character so far – is that of Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

Nolan decided to bring a darker and more realistic Gotham and Batman starting in 2005 with the film Batman Begins, which had Ra’s al Ghul (Liam Neeson) and Jonathan Crane a.k.a. Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy) as villains. Batman Begins was followed by the critically acclaimed The Dark Knight, which brought another version of the Joker, now played by Heath Ledger, and is considered among the best superhero films of all-time. Nolan closed the Dark Knight trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, with Bane (Tom Hardy) as the villain to defeat. The Dark Knight Rises also introduced Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), who after playing against Batman ended up falling for him, and by the end of the film, they were together and living far from Gotham and anything related to superhero (and criminal) life.

The relationship between Bruce and Selina is well documented in the comics, but in the film, it wasn’t real until the very end, when Alfred finds Bruce and Selina vacationing in Europe. Still, Nolan and company might have added a subtle reference to their relationship and their daughter, even if they weren’t together during that particular scene. When Selina is posing as a maid at Wayne Manor, during the time Bruce retired from being Batman and became a recluse, she goes to his room to deliver his dinner and begins to look around the room. There she finds a bullseye with arrows, and is startled by Bruce shooting an arrow next to her head. This detail of archery could be a reference to Helena Wayne, the daughter of Bruce and Selina of an alternate universe in the comics.

Helena Wayne debuted on DC Super Stars #17 in 1977, and as the daughter of those two peculiar characters, she grew up enjoying the benefits of a wealthy household and was also trained by her parents to become a super athlete. After Silky Cernak blackmailed Selina into resuming action as Catwoman, which led to her death, Helena was determined to bring Cernak to justice, and created her own costume, took some weapons from her parents’ equipment and adapted them to her needs, including a crossbow, and went after him. Helena then decided to continue fighting crime, and assumed the identity of “Huntress”. Meanwhile, in that universe, Helena Bertinelli (the first Huntress) was an agent of the spy organization Spyral.

Helena Wayne was played by Ashley Scott in the 2002 TV series Birds of Prey and reprised her role in the Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths. Bertinelli, on the other hand, was played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the DCEU’s Birds of Prey. It’s unknown if the addition of the arrows in The Dark Knight Rises was an intentional reference to Helena Wayne or not, as Nolan hasn’t spoken about it, but it’s interesting that they appear in the scene where Bruce and Selina first meet, which supports the idea of it being a subtle reference to their daughter in the comics.
