The Last of Us Part II Who Are The Fireflies

Whether you are new to The Last Of Us or just need a refresher, here is a general overview of the infamous in-game militia group known as the Fireflies.

SPOILER WARNING: This article will discuss details and spoilers from The Last of Us.

The Beginnings Of The Fireflies:

In the 2020s, the United States had its federal disaster response agency, aka FEDRA, handle containment of the cordyceps fungus. Once the cordyceps infection began to spread uncontrollably across the United States, martial law was declared by FEDRA, and quarantine zones were created. During their efforts to contain the parasitic fungus, the United States government quickly began to abuse the situation and used the military to manage quarantine zones, which oppressed the general populace. In response to the military’s actions, riots broke out across the country in quarantine zones, and the public began to attack the military. From these riots, the Fireflies were formed with the goal of calling for an end to the military occupation and the return of all branches of government.

Led by Marlene, the Fireflies pushed the public to riot against the military. As riots across the country broke out, members of the Fireflies were killed and only further emboldened the rebel group. Unfortunately, as riots continued, citizens not affiliated with the Fireflies began to turn on the rebel group, seeing them as a possible threat once the military was gone. Facing opposition from both the military and general public, the Fireflies began to lose their momentum and eventually had to flee to escape certain death. The dream of returning order was dying.

The Fireflies During The Last Of Us

While political tensions are what fueled the Fireflies’ core mission, they did not forget about the cordyceps infection. Despite facing opposition from various groups, the Fireflies tried to research into the possibility of finding a cure for the cordyceps infection, but unfortunately, all their attempts failed. During the events of The Last of Us: American Dreams, Marlene and members of the Fireflies in Boston learned Ellie had a natural immunity to the cordyceps infection. New hope for the vaccine was found.

Now in 2033, Marlene had sent a smuggler to retrieve Ellie and take her to a Firefly lab. As many players know, when Joel entered the picture, Marlene’s plans were derailed. While the Fireflies planned to use Ellie as a source for a vaccine, Joel quickly shot down the idea once he learned this would mean sacrificing Ellie. Joel killed Marlene, the head surgeon, and took Ellie out of the hand of the Fireflies. With the leader of the rebel group dead, the dream of the Fireflies vanished along with her.
