Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, “Chapter 14: The Tragedy.”

The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, “Chapter 14: The Tragedy” introduced Din Djarin to the ancient Jedi world of Tython – but unfortunately its location is something of a major plot hole. When Ahsoka told Mando to bring Baby Yoda to the planet Tython, viewers who were familiar with the old Expanded Universe were delighted. Tython has a rich history in Legends, and it has already been referenced several times in the Disney canon. In fact, Simon Spurrier’s ongoing Doctor Aphra series visited Tython in the original trilogy era.

Mando followed Ahsoka’s instructions, placing Baby Yoda upon a Seeing Stone at the center of a ruined temple. This was clearly a powerful Force Vergence, and when it triggered Baby Yoda slipped into some sort of trance, one that could not be interrupted by Din Djarin until a mysterious process had been completed. When that was done, Baby Yoda was left exhausted, unable to protect himself from the Empire’s Dark Troopers. He slipped into unconsciousness, but when he awakened again he appeared more powerful than ever before, using the Force offensively against a group of Stormtroopers.

Unfortunately The Mandalorian’s portrayal of Tython is something of a major plot hole. When Tython appeared in the old Expanded Universe, it was portrayed as a secret Jedi world concealed in the galaxy’s Deep Core. Hyperspace travel in that region of space is tricky, with spacetime warped by a supermassive black hole that lies at the heart of the spiral galaxy. This portrayal has been confirmed in Disney canon, with Tython explicitly referenced as being in the Deep Core in both the Nexus of Power Handbook and the Doctor Aphra series. Unfortunately, in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, Fennec Shand clearly indicates the planet they are on is found in the Outer Rim – and it’s clearly not difficult for ships to reach Tython, given both Boba Fett and Moff Gideon are able to follow Mando there.

The planet Tython itself appears very different. Previously, Tython has been treated as a cold and frigid environment, with the mountains shaped by glaciers. Indeed, Darth Vader visited one ancient Jedi Temple on the Meridional Ice Cap, and the term “Meridional” seemed to suggest a large portion of the world was covered in ice. But the Tython seen in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6 has no visible ice, and instead has a great deal of vegetation. There are signs of ancient glaciation; Mando and his unlikely allies Boba Fett and Fennec Shand wind up taking on Stormtrooper units among glacial moraine, and the mountains around the Jedi Temple contain several cirques, over-deepened hollows created because they were the birthplace of glaciers. But the whole area is far too vegetated, suggesting the ice retreated long ago.

All in all, then, The Mandalorian’s portrayal of Tython really doesn’t seem to work too well with the established canon. That is particularly disappointing given Tython has only recently been seen in Marvel’s Doctor Aphra comics, so it had been assumed there would be synergies between the two mediums in this matter. The problem isn’t impossible to solve, however; given both worlds were clearly tied to the ancient Jedi Order, it is possible the name “Tython” is simply an old Jedi word for “home,” and that both planets are known by the same moniker. It’s clearly not what Lucasfilm intended, but it is probably the best fix for this unexpected continuity error in The Mandalorian.
