When did the Machines first build a simulated reality in the mythology of The Matrix? In the wacky world of the Wachowskis, a race of machines overthrew humanity in the far future and crafted a digital world that not only placated the remaining organic life forms, but also harvested them as an energy source. Known as the Matrix, this realm could be escaped with the right kind of help, and then reentered by those who had previously been liberated. The likes of Neo could morph the reality of the Matrix like some kind of technological lucid dream. But while the Matrix was key to the Machines’ dominance of Earth, they didn’t get the trick right at the first time of asking.

In The Matrix Reloaded, Neo meets The Architect, who informs Keanu Reeves’ character that everything occurring now had happened several times before. The Machines first built a paradise simulation for the humans to populate, only for the inhabitants to reject their new world. Our metallic overlords then tried a horrible dystopia, but man rejected that also. It was thanks to The Oracle that the third version of the Matrix was built, which gave those trapped inside a subconscious choice to leave. This brought stability to the program and between Matrix ver. 3.0 and the world seen in the movie trilogy, various cycles of the program have played out repeatedly. Unfortunately, The Architect gives no clue as to when that first utopian Matrix was launched by the Machines. When did this landmark event occur in relation to real-world time?

The key date for the creation of the first Matrix appears to be 2199, or sometime shortly following. In the original movie, Morpheus explains to Neo that his digital self believed it was 1999, but the true date is actually closer to 2199, although the people of Zion can’t know for sure. Indeed, The Architect later reveals that Morpheus is mistaken, since his people have no idea that the Matrix has already been rebooted 6 times, putting the actual date centuries ahead of Morpheus’ guess. Nevertheless, there could be a good reason Morpheus cites 2199 – that was potentially the year humanity fell.

Included in The Animatrix is “The Second Renaissance,” which chronicles the build up and events of the war between mankind and the Machines. This story begins in the middle of the 21st century while humanity still maintains control over its mechanical creations, and tells the tale of BI-66ER, a robot who unwittingly provides the spark for the entire inter-species war. The BI-66ER incident occurred sometime in the late-21st/early-22nd century, with war breaking out properly around 2139, ending the period of prosperity known as the Second Renaissance, which started in 2090.

This is where some guesswork comes in. The Machine War was a lengthy conflict, but it’s hard to give a precise duration. Given that the people of Zion have been conditioned to believe the year is 2199, however, it’s perhaps logical to assume that humanity’s complete surrender came in the actual 2199 after 60 years of conflict. The Machines were already spit-balling ways of turning their new fleshy slaves into an alternative power source before their victory, so were likely already primed to boot up the initial Matrix as soon as their enemies surrendered, meaning that first simulation was built in 2199. If the Machine War lasted less than 60 years, then the creation of the first Matrix can be rolled back accordingly.

Like many elements of The Matrix, this timeline is open to interpretation. The original movie trilogy is very vague when it comes to actual dates, and The Animatrix and comic book releases only give a few scant references, leaving plenty of room for ambiguity and maneuver. Nevertheless, 2199 feels like a reasonable best guess, as it gives significance to Zion’s calendar estimation in the original Matrix movie, but also fits more or less with the few dates given in wider media.
