Why can’t Jude Law’s Sam leave Osea Island in The Third Day? The HBO series opens with the character’s arrival, while the second episode shows that locals are plotting against him. In episode 3, “Sunday – The Ghost”, the truth finally emerges about Sam’s background and fateful connection to Osea lore.
In The Third Day, Sam finds truth in the outdoors. He initially visits the forest location of his son’s murder, and then saves a young girl named Epona (Jessie Ross) from hanging herself. When Sam returns Epona home to Osea, he’s met with passive-aggressive energy from local men and women. However, a different faction of Osea residents try to make him as comfortable as possible. It’s implied that Sam may have some financial difficulties back home (and maybe even some mental health issues), but his immediate concerns are justified due to threats from an Osea man named Larry (John Dagleish). In “Saturday – The Son”, Larry attacks Sam and prepares him for some type of ritual with a preacher (Amer Chadha-Patel). The first two episodes of The Third Day on HBO frame Sam as a victim of circumstance.
The Third Day’s episode 3 explains the true reasons for all of Sam’s troubles. During the opening minutes, the preacher prays for the “true Father” while Larry continues to physically torment Law’s character. In a brief sequence, Professor Mimir (Börje Lundberg) provides the first bit of truth that Sam needs to understand his predicament. He’s been baptized in the name of Esus, which links to the Celts belief that Osea is the soul of the world and needs a “Father” for protection during dark times. Sam always believed that his grandfather was once stationed at Osea, but the truth is that he was born there as the grandson of the original Father, Charington. Because various heirs declined to look after Osea, Sam is regarded as the rightful Father. Unfortunately, his behavior leads many to believe that he’s a problem rather than an answer.
Sam eventually learns the full truth from Mr. Martin (Paddy Considine) and Mrs. Martin (Emily Watson). Their current Father, known only as “Old Man” (Richard Bremmer), initially planned to explain everything to Sam and hoped that he would accept his fate. However, Mr. Martin set in motion a secondary plan in which Sam’s son, a direct descendant of Charington, would be kidnapped as a backup plan. Once Sam arrived at Osea Island, the locals could assess whether or not he was a suitable Father. Mrs. Martin ultimately reached the same conclusion as Larry — Sam is the problem, not the answer. However, another twist of fate establishes Law’s distressed character as the rightful leader, one that the entire community relies on as their savior and protector.
In The Third Day, Sam’s repeated attempts to escape “the darkness” only strengthen his connection with the island. He’s eventually pulled back by the tides, along with the knowledge that his son is indeed alive. When a visiting researcher named Jess (Katherine Waterston) essentially betrays Sam and returns him to the locals, the existing Father commits suicide in a ritual that’s comparable to the human sacrifices in Midsommar. Through death, the “Old Man” opens the path for Sam to enter the “Big House”, where he’s reunited with his son, Nathan. A swarm of crickets suggest that Death is on the horizon, but the implications are cryptic. Sam could very well experience a literal death in the near future, but it’s most likely that he’ll symbolically embrace “the darkness”, and thus restore order in both Osea and the world beyond.
