Stefan Salvatore may have started out his journey in the successful vampire TV show The Vampire Diaries as little more than the cool mysterious hot new guy but as the show progressed, Stefan changed and the fans learned more and more about him.

Stefan was a nice guy most of the time but he also struggled with his thirst for blood and his tendency to kill people when he fed on human blood. In the end, he sacrificed his life so that his brother Damon and Elena got their happily ever after. Stefan is now dead but there are still a few questions that we have about him.

10 Why Was Stefan Going To School?

Vampires are usually either immortal or at least as near as immortality as possible in literature, films, and TV shows. Since they have so much time on their hands, one could expect that they find better usage for it than going to school over and over again, let alone high school which is a nightmare for many people.

Yet going to high school is exactly what Stefan chooses to do. Granted, he might not have been able to do so before but he wasn’t really missing all that much in the first place. He most likely went there to meet Elena but he could have met her in a different way just as easily.

9 Why Didn’t Stefan Get Kicked Out Of School?

Speaking of Stefan’s high school, it’s a wonder he didn’t get kicked out or at least had to face some serious repercussions. After all, Stefan might have started going to Mystic Falls high school in the first season of The Vampire Diaries but he’s rarely ever there and it almost seems like he’s spending more time anywhere else than in his school.

He’s usually too busy dealing with his relationship with Elena, Damon, fighting his enemies, or trying to save someone from being killed. So it’s a wonder he was able to finish the school considering how little effort he put into it.

8 What Does Stefan Do In His Free Time?

Stefan was born in the 1840s and he became a vampire in 1864 when he was seventeen. That means that by the time the show starts, he’s already been around well over one hundred and forty years. Yet it seems like he did very little during the time and doesn’t really have that many hobbies.

In fact, it looks like Stefan spends most of his time either fighting his enemies or charming his girlfriend(s), but other than that, he doesn’t really do much, maybe except hang out at bars. Even Klaus had more hobbies than Stefan and he was too busy plotting all the time.

7 Why Doesn’t Stefan Know Anything?

As established above, Stefan may look very young (albeit perhaps not as young as seventeen) but he’s been around for a while. That’s why it’s so strange that Stefan doesn’t really know anything, at least when it comes to the supernatural world.

Any sane person’s course of action would be to find out everything possible about his kind and other supernatural creatures once he or she becomes a vampire, but Stefan doesn’t do that. So when he comes to Mystic Falls, he doesn’t really know much about werewolves, witches, vampire hunters, sirens, and even hasn’t heard about the original vampires even though he dated one of them, Rebekah.

6 Why Can’t Stefan Control His Thirst?

Vampires sometimes have trouble controlling their urge to feed and drain their chosen victims dry, effectively killing them in the process. That usually happens when they’ve been recently turned, are not vampires for a long time, and can’t control their urges. But Stefan has the same problem even though he became a vampire all the way back in 1864.

When he comes back to Mystic Falls, he’s feeding on animal blood instead of human blood which makes him weaker than his brother Damon. But Stefan soon falls off the wagon and reveals that he’s actually the Ripper, a vampire known for tearing the heads off his victims when he feeds on them. Why can’t he control himself better, though?

5 Why Doesn’t Stefan Burn In The Sun?

As it’s been often shown in literature, vampires are allergic to the sun. The Vampire Diaries vampires burn in the sun very quickly and nothing more is left of them than a pile of ashes if the sun touches their skin.

The only exception is the original vampires who are immune to the sun’s deadly effect on vampires and those vampires who have an enchanted lapis lazuli stone either in their rings, bracelets, or another form of jewelry. Other vampires burn very fast on the sun but even when Stefan faced the sun without his ring, he didn’t die or was as severely injured as he should have been.

4 Why Didn’t Stefan Send His Uncle Away?

Stefan and Damon don’t have a lot of close relatives at least not those that the show’s viewers would get to meet during The Vampire Diaries’ eight seasons. One of their close relatives the fans did see in the show was Stefan’s “uncle” Zach who played a part in the first season.

Zach lived in the Salvatore family home and he wasn’t very happy when Damon came along, to put it mildly since these two never got along. Damon later killed Zach so it seems his fears were justified. But Stefan could have prevented Zach’s death by simply sending him away and he wouldn’t lose him this way.

3 Was Stefan In Love With Katherine?

Stefan has lived a long time and as such, he had a few loves and romances along the way. Some of them were rather brief, some of them lasted longer. But one of the most influential relationships of his life and the one that caused his transformation into a vampire was his relationship with Katherine Pierce.

Katherine and Stefan were together when he was still human and it was her blood in his body that changed Stefan into a vampire. Stefan later claimed that Katherine had only made him love her but he and Katherine were later together briefly so perhaps he loved her just as she did love him, despite his previous denial.

2 Did Stefan Consider Klaus His Friend?

Another villain, besides Katherine, with whom Stefan had a complicated love-hate relationship in the show was one of the original vampires, Klaus Mikaelson. Stefan may have dated Klaus’ sister Rebekah briefly but it was Klaus with whom he spent a lot of time in the 1920s.

When they met again, Klaus was hoping to rekindle their friendship but Stefan was less than keen and he was convinced that Klaus had messed with his mind and their friendship wasn’t real. Klaus did compel Stefan to turn off his emotions, but whether their friendship was real or not, Klaus did always seem to have a soft spot for Stefan.

1 Did Stefan Make The Right Choice?

For a rather long time, it looked like Stefan and Elena would be the endgame, the one couple that would stay together no matter what. But life drove them apart and Elena ended up with Damon instead and they lived out their human lives together at the end of the show. But what about Stefan?

Well, he rebonded pretty well, dated several women, shortly rekindled his romance with Katherine (see above), but in the end, he and Caroline found their way to each other and even got married. Yet Stefan chose to sacrifice his own life which made many fans wonder what could have been if he survived and stayed with Caroline instead.
