While its popularity has certainly waned over the years, there’s still no denying that The Walking Dead was and is one of the largest entertainment franchises of all time.

Today, we’re going to be taking a look at Telltale’s video game adaption of the series, along with the TV show, to find out which of the two are superior to one another. Let’s take a look at all this evidence now.

10 The Game: No Comic Ties

One thing that the game has over the show is that it doesn’t have to adhere to any content that it is adapting, as it is an original story.

Sure, the show certainly isn’t afraid to switch things around (especially in its current era), but it still generally tells the same story as the comics. With the game, you don’t even have an inkling of what could be coming next.

9 The Show: Action Sequences

However, one thing that the show had over the games was its amazing action sequences. Becky getting bitten by a walker is a lot more powerful in 4k 60FPS than Telltale’s horrible engine sputtering halfway through the cutscene.

While the art style of the series was fine, many times there were just too many performance issues to make scenes as powerful as they could have been. The show, on the other hand, was using live-action footage with incredible effects that made everything seem real.

8 The Game: You’re Playing It (Emotional Connection)

At the same time, you’re still going to feel much more connected to the game’s characters than the show’s. After all, you’re controlling them, the characters are an extension of you. You decide who lives, and who dies. With so much control over what happens to these characters, you’re just going to feel more attached to them by default.

With this in mind, it’s easy to ignore some technical difficulties to keep playing through the games. Clementine’s story isn’t something you can just give up on halfway through.

7 The Show: The Realism

As we mentioned earlier, the action sequences of the show are infinitely better than the games. But this just goes for the look of the show in general. The games, as previously mentioned, don’t run crazy well. The show looks great at all times.

Locations are great, characters look like they really are in an apocalypse, it all just works. In this sense, the show really has the leg up on the game. It simply looks better.

6 The Game: Lee And Clementine’s Relationship

The games and the show tell two very different stories. As we’ll talk about in a bit, the show really tells an ensemble story. The game tends to focus on one major character, and all the things that go on around them. The story of Lee and Clementine, and later just Clementine, is incredibly powerful.

Following Lee’s role as her father figure, and then watching Clementine slowly enter adulthood and her own parental role was simply beautiful. We watched Clementine grow up, and the satisfying conclusion that we were given really wrapped everything up in the best way possible.

5 The Show: An Ensemble Cast

On the other hand, The Walking Dead’s TV adaption tends to focus on an ensemble cast, following many different characters and groups throughout the show’s history. There’s perks to both methods of storytelling, and the show allows for a bigger world and story to be told. You get to see more of how the world is unfolding.

With the interesting story that the show has set up, this is really essential. As long as all of the characters are handled right (which The Walking Dead usually does), more is never a bad thing.

4 The Game: Replayability

One thing that the game has over the show is the ability to spend hours upon hours in its world. With Telltale’s adaptation, you can sink hours into exploring every possibility of outcomes in the game. Crying a lot while you’re doing it, but still.

With the TV adaptation, that simply isn’t possible. You can’t make a Bandersntach for 10 seasons worth of content, it isn’t realistic. In terms of the replayability of the game versus simply watching the show, there is a clear winner.

3 The Show: A Massive Budget

Of course, that isn’t to say that the show can’t make you sob like an idiot as well. The show manages to do this through its excellent storytelling, and this is due in part to the massive budget that the show has.

With the mountains of money that it prints, AMC’s The Walking Dead is able to create just about every scenario they could ever dream of. They have the money to do so. With limitless possibilities, the show is able to make an incredible emotional impact on viewers.

2 The Game: Choices

Of course, the main advantage that the game had over the show is its main inspiration. Player choice. In Telltale’s The Walking Dead, you decided the outcome of things, or rather, the consequences of your choices did.

This allowed for a different level of resonance that the players had with the game, which is just something that the show couldn’t quite achieve. While both mediums certainly had their benefits, the main goal of any piece of entertainment is to pull a viewer in and immerse them. Player choice certainly helped Telltale do that in a way that a TV show just can’t.

1 The Show: Not Developed By Telltale

The controversy that surrounded Telltale, especially during the final season’s production, was horrible. The laying off of almost every single one of their employees, it was awful to watch play out. While the final season was eventually picked up by Skybound and was a great send-off to the series, it will forever be surrounded by the studio politics that surrounded it at the time of its release, and that’s something that can never be erased.

That’s an aspect of The Walking Dead that the TV show simply doesn’t have to contend with, which is an obvious point on their side of the field.
