Warning! Spoilers for Thor #17 by Marvel Comics below

After being shown a dark future where Thanos has killed the Avengers and stolen Mjolnir for himself, Thor is even more terrified of the villain’s arrival than ever before. In the newest issue of Thor’s ongoing series, the God of Thunder told his mother Frigga he won’t raise a child to inherit his “cursed throne,” especially after seeing the Mad Titan destroy everything he cares for.

In the first arc of Thor by Marvel Comics, the titular hero fought against the Black Winter and became the Herald of Galactus. After defeating the cosmic villain, Thor was given a glimpse into the future of the moment he would die. The longtime Avenger was shown a timeline where Thanos not only wielded Mjolnir but embedded it with the Infinity Stones. Meanwhile, he was joined by the undead Avengers, who had become reanimated under the villain’s rule. Thor’s look into the future has haunted him ever since, as he hasn’t been able to shake his prophesized death.

In Thor #17 by Donny Cates, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico, and Matthew Wilson, Thor reunites with Frigga and sister Angela and shares a tender moment with his mother. After reconnecting with his mom, Thor reveals he will be the last and final King of Asgard. Frigga tells him he can have as many heirs as he’d like, but Thor pushes back and reveals he will not be raising a child to inherit his throne. Thor says he can’t, “not after what I have seen… not after Thanos.”

While Frigga offers Thor emotional support, telling him that they’ll face his challenges together and that everything will be OK, the Avengers call him and reveal Mjolnir has been stolen. It appears the dark future the Black Winter showed Thor is starting right before his eyes. Is Thanos responsible for Mjolnir’s disappearance – and is this the first domino to fall in his eventual slaying of the Avengers and Thor? It seems possible that’s the case.

Much like in Avengers: Endgame, seeing Thanos destroy the Avengers looms heavily over Thor. In Thor’s Marvel Comics adventures, however, he’s more terrified than ever. The King of Asgard doesn’t want to bring heirs to the Throne of Asgard just to see them die at the hands of Thanos. So with Mjolnir on the fritz (and now stolen), plus the looming arrival of the Mad Titan, Thor is trying to ensure he and the Avengers have a future in the Marvel Universe while minimizing the potential damage along the way. Thor #17 is in comic book shops now.
