We finally have an update on the latest Pokémon film, and it’s come by way of a new trailer and release date.

Pokémon Coco, the 23rd feature film in the Pokémon chronicle has had a few setbacks thanks to the pandemic, but now The Pokémon Company is happy to announce a holiday release date. Pokémon Coco will be released in Japanese theaters on Christmas day of this year after originally being slated to come out back in July. Along with the announcement of a new official release date, there is also a new trailer to give fans a closer look at Pokémon Coco.

The plot of Pokémon Coco follows a young boy raised in the wild by a dark monkey Pokémon named Zarude. Things seem to be going fine for Coco and his surrogate parent, swinging in the trees of the jungle, communing with nature and other Pokémon, until Ash and Pikachu show up and the drama inevitably follows.

During this new trailer, we see Ash exposing Coco to the civilized world, with things like ice cream, pants, and fireworks. He is basically playing the Jane to Coco’s Tarzan. Team Rocket is also there to fumble around the jungle, but the real bad guy seems to be causing some massive explosions in Coco’s neck of the woods and Zarude is not having it. In both trailers, a pink Celebi make an appearance, could it be that Ash is back tracking to the Ilex Forest and older fans will be getting a blast from the past?

This announcement is exciting for several reasons – first and foremost, more Pokémon movies, duh. But second is the fact that Japan feels confident enough in the way their country is handling the pandemic to make an announcement like this. Stateside, there have been several false starts as far as when theaters will be opening and highly anticipated movies, like the live action reboot of Mulan, have been announced and re-announced what seems like every month.
