UPDATE Destiny 2s HalloweenThemed Festival Of The Lost Event Will Return With A Horde Mode (Of Sorts)

Destiny’s Festival of the Lost event will be super-familiar to fans of the franchise. We missed out last year, with the release of the second game in September, but Bungie is definitely keen to make up for lost time. This year’s event is going to be the biggest and most involved yet.

Halloween is almost upon us, friends, and that only means one thing. Well, two. Firstly, overzealous stores are already starting to display their darn Christmas decorations and such (seriously, what’s all that about?). Second, all of our favorite games are getting in on the action with some spooky content.

In that arena, the original Destiny was known for its Festival of the Lost. This event was largely focused around collecting cosmetic items, in the shape of different masks and other collectibles. It was a neat little touch, if that sort of thing was your bag, but didn’t do very much to spice up the gameplay itself. That’s not going to be the case with Destiny 2‘s first shot at the event, though.

As we reported earlier this month, this year’s Festival of the Lost is going to kick off on October 16th. Special edition quests, cosmetics, and other things are coming, but it’s also going to be a bit deeper than that.

Bungie has released a new blog post, which details everything fans can look forward to when the event kicks off. As befits Halloween, the whole thing has a very somber tone. “The last year has changed everything,” the post states. “The Red Legion razed the Last City. Countless Guardians were lost. Despite victories on Mercury and Mars, morale in the Tower is low after the fall of a legend: Cayde-6. This year, death has not passed us by. It has come to stay.”

The Tower, as such, will be decorated in a grim yet hopeful way, so as to raise the spirits of the occupants while commemorating the fallen. This idea is evident throughout the Halloween content. Holliday, for instance, will offer new bounties with a new currency as a reward: fragmented Souls. You can spend these to buy limited edition masks during the event, as well as the Horror Story Legendary Auto Rifle.

Aside from that, there’s an all-new challenge to tackle: the Haunted Forest. As Polygon reports, this seems to be the horde mode-style affair that Bungie has hinted at. You can take on the forest by yourself, through matchmaking or with your own fireteam, and the goal is to progress as far through the spooky locale as you can. You’ve got a strict fifteen-minute time limit in which to do so.

The other big-ticket item at the Festival of the Lost is an oh-so-Halloween-ish murder mystery. It surrounds the mysterious demise of the House of Wolves expansion’s Master Ives. You’ll have to complete a series of exclusive new quests to solve this mystery. We don’t know yet what players will receive for solving this, but ‘powerful rewards’ have been promised. The Master Ives quests will be available starting October 30th.
