The Walking Dead season 11 is introducing Mercer, but who is this intimidating series newcomer in red armor? After a pandemic delay, The Walking Dead season 10’s finale wrapped up the Whisperer War, with Negan and Daryl defeating Beta and Maggie riding to the rescue against the skin-wearing enemy horde. Elsewhere, Eugene’s long hunt for a girlfriend led he, Yumiko, Ezekiel and Princess (a stray they picked up along the way) to an abandoned train yard. Rather than a romantic first meeting with Stephanie, however, Eugene was faced with the Stormtrooper-esque soldiers of her community, the Commonwealth.

Though The Walking Dead season 10’s supplementary episodes showed the prisoners bagged and ready to transport, there’s still no sign of a Commonwealth authority figure, but season 11’s new trailer offers the first official glimpse at Mercer. The promo cycles through The Walking Dead’s familiar roster of protagonists, each sporting a suitably grave expression, and also includes a handful of threatening Commonwealth soldiers. There are, however, two worthy points of interest. Aside from characters, the trailer includes a wide board of photographs that comic fans will recognize as the wall Commonwealth residents use to post pictures of lost loved ones they believe might still be alive. The second is a formidable looking man in striking red armor – but who is this mysterious stranger?

The newbie in question is Mercer, a Commonwealth soldier played by Michael James Shaw. Not, in fact, a member of Emperor Palpatine’s personal guard, the red armor signifies Mercer is in command of the Commonwealth’s military force, effectively leading the infantrymen clad in white. Mercer reports directly to the community’s leader, Pamela Milton, although since this character hasn’t yet been confirmed for the TV show, his boss might be someone else entirely in live-action. Many fans will be pleased to know that Mercer’s appearance is completely comic-accurate. The red suit of armor is almost a like-for-like translation of his comic apparel, and even the hairstyle and beard are more or less spot-on.

The Walking Dead’s season 11 trailer intentionally depicts Mercer in an antagonistic light, and while he’s certainly not as immediately affable as, say, Princess, there’s much more to the character that straight-up villainy. If Mercer’s story arc is as faithful to the source material as his design, the soldier will be conflicted between his duties as a Commonwealth higher-up, and his own moral principles. Mercer’s introduction could signal a new romantic relationship for one of the Alexandria survivors, but in terms of platonic bonds, it was Rick Grimes he came to respect the most in the comics. With Andrew Lincoln long gone from The Walking Dead’s main show, it’ll be interesting to see who Mercer takes a liking to instead. Daryl Dixon would be the most obvious pick, but the TV series also has Carol and Yumiko in more prominent roles. Mercer might see eye to eye with them more than Norman Reedus’ character.

With The Walking Dead season 11 marking the end of an era (though not the end of the franchise), Mercer is the final major comic addition fans have been waiting for. Such is the anticipation surrounding his arrival, many initially suspected Elijah was the TV show’s interpretation of Mercer before Maggie revealed her friend’s real name. Now that Mercer’s season 11 debut is imminent, it’s vital The Walking Dead do him justice. He certainly makes a good first impression in the trailer.
