Here’s how The Walking Dead season 9 episode 13 was a milestone moment for Daryl Dixon actor Norman Reedus. The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon is a pivotal part of the show, but he was actually a last-minute addition to AMC’s zombie apocalypse drama. Reedus originally auditioned to play Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) and although he wasn’t successful, the producers of The Walking Dead were so impressed they created the role of Merle’s brother Daryl specifically for him. It was a smart move as both Daryl and Reedus quickly became Walking Dead favorites.

Today, Daryl Dixon is just one of two characters who remain from The Walking Dead’s original Atlanta survivors alongside Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier and like Carol, Daryl has come along way from his early days. Once an emotionally stunted redneck, Daryl’s character progression has seen him evolve into both a badass with a heart of gold and Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) right-hand man. Since Rick’s departure in “What Comes After,” Daryl has become an even more important character as The Walking Dead season 9 episode 13 proved.

Titled “Chokepoint,” The Walking Dead season 9 episode 13 put Daryl Dixon front and center and saw him team with Connie (Lauren Ridloff) to help get Henry (Matt Lintz) and Lydia (Cassady McClincy) away from the Whisperers. One aspect of the episode that was widely praised was the showdown between Daryl and the Whisperers’ second-in-command Beta (Ryan Hurst) – a blistering and unpredictable fight that eventually saw Daryl get the better of Beta. “Chokepoint” also marked the first appearance of the Highwaymen in The Walking Dead, but the episode was memorable for more than just those moments.

The Walking Dead season 9 episode 13 saw Norman Reedus surpass Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln in terms of most appearances on the show. Up until his final appearance in “What Comes After,” Lincoln had appeared in a total of 103 episodes but “Chokepoint” marked Norman Reedus’ 104th appearance on The Walking Dead. As of the show’s current tenth season, Norman Reedus boasts the most Walking Dead appearances with 167 episodes under his belt and is swiftly followed by Melissa McBride who has appeared in 166 episodes to date.

The Walking Dead is soon set to come to an end with its upcoming eleventh season, but that doesn’t mean Daryl’s time on the small screen is done. Reedus and McBride will reprise their roles in an as-yet-untitled spinoff focusing on Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, so fans of The Walking Dead can expect to see plenty more of Daryl in the future
