Walking Deads CRM Is Evil (But The Civic Republic Might Not Be)

The CRM is certainly evil, but The Walking Dead: World Beyond is hinting at the Civic Republic not being so bad. That could be a good thing for the show’s core group, because it means allies among the organization may not be as hard to find as it was once thought. Right now, the main characters – particularly Hope (Alexa Mansour) and Iris (Aliyah Royale) — are committed to thwarting their enemies’ plans.

The people responsible for abducting Rick Grimes are becoming less and less mysterious the more The Walking Dead: World Beyond’s story unfolds. Hope currently being in the company of characters like Elizabeth (Julia Ormond), Dr. Belshaw (Natalie Gold), and Dr. Leo Bennett (Joe Holt) has led to a number of interesting reveals about the CRM and what their goals are in the Walking Dead universe. In World Beyond season 2, episode 2, titled “Foothold”, Dr. Belshaw explained to Hope that their scientists are working on a “big picture” plan to eradicate the undead from the Earth, courtesy of a disease that they hope can be created from Dr. Bennett’s work.

If Dr. Belshaw can be believed, then it seems like her character – and the other scientists working there – aren’t actually evil. Of course, she is involved in a scheme by Elizabeth to keep Dr. Bennett “motivated”, but there are clear signs that point to her and people like her being kept in the dark about the horrors perpetrated by the CRM. Just like Iris has theorized, the CRM killed everyone at Omaha and the Campus Colony. But scientists such as Dr. Belshaw may never be made aware of these dark details about how the CRM really works.

That’s because there’s a separation between Elizabeth’s armed soldiers and everyone else who works there. On several occasions, the characters have made references to “the CR”, instead of just calling it the CRM. This is one way that World Beyond has gotten the point across that the Civic Republic Military and the Civic Republic are two different entities. The CRM is just the militant force that serves and works alongside the CR. That explains why Civic Republic characters busy working on the zombie virus cure are totally ignorant of what their allies are doing.

The Civic Republic not being the villains that the CRM are could have important implications for Walking Dead: World Beyond and the wider Walking Dead universe. It could provide a way for the main characters to gain support from powerful people and overcome their adversaries. The CRM may have a ton of manpower, but if key figures in the Civic Republic were to develop doubts about their actions in the same way that Dr. Bennett has in season 2, trouble could be on the horizon for Elizabeth and the higher-ups at the CRM.
