Sega is set to re-release Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz for PC and all modern consoles, and they’ve let us know in no uncertain terms that the future of the franchise is dependent on Banana Blitz’s success.

In an interview with Crunchyroll, Sega’s Masao Shirosaki said that if there’s enough support for the new HD version of the Nintendo Wii game, the success will open up the doors for new entries into the series.

There hasn’t been a new entry into Sega’s Super Monkey Ball series since the 2012 Vita game Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz (unless you count the 2014 Peggle clone on mobile, which you shouldn’t). Banana Splitz (Not to be confused with Banana Blitz), was something of a commercial failure, which it appears that Sega attributed to lack of interest in the Super Monkey Ball franchise, rather than, you know, the fact that it was on the Vita.

The interview with Shirosaki also touched on why they’re remaking Banana Blitz, rather than the more-highly-praised first and second games in the Super Monkey Ball Franchise, and the answer is honestly a little disheartening: the team had a limited budget, and Banana Blitz looked to be the easiest game to port to modern systems.

Sure, it’s 12 years old, but updating the graphics for a Nintendo Wii game is going to be easier than updating a Nintendo Gamecube game.

Shirosaki did add that updates of the original classics may also happen if there’s enough interest in the game, and went on to say that he does hope that the next game he works on will be a new Super Monkey Ball title.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to say just how much success is needed for Sega to justify revisiting its classic level-tilting, ball-rolling platformer, but it looks like like the fate of the series is now up to the cold calculus of sales numbers. Fair or unfair, that’s how a business has to choose how to distribute its resources.
