The Walking Dead coming to an end is big news for the trilogy of movies centered on Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). Months after the season 10 finale was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, AMC announced that season 10 would be extended by an additional six episodes. Now, it’s been revealed that the following season – which will consist of 24 episodes – will be the show’s last.

Though the main series is ending, that doesn’t change the fact that AMC has huge plans for the foreseeable future of the Walking Dead universe. Fear the Walking Dead season 6 and World Beyond are both scheduled to premiere in October. Also airing in October is the long-delayed Walking Dead season 10 premiere. At the beginning of 2021, AMC will release the rest of season 10, with its extended final season starting near the end of 2021 and ending sometime in late 2022. Afterward, AMC will move on to an anthology series and an additional Walking Dead series in 2023: a spinoff with Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride). On top of all that, AMC still has plans for three movies that will reveal what happened to Rick after his disappearance in season 9.

The news that The Walking Dead will wrap up with season 11 answers a few questions about how AMC may approach the Rick Grimes movies. Since there hasn’t been much – if any – progress on the movies, it’s going to take some time before they can get off the ground. It seems highly likely that by the time the first movie releases, The Walking Dead will already be over. That actually makes it easier for AMC to work in any crossovers between the show and the movies. Though Michonne (Danai Gurira), who is arguably the most important person needed to join Rick in the movies, has already left the show, other transitions may need to happen as well, especially since Judith (Cailey Fleming) and Rick’s son are still in Alexandria.

Putting a handful of Walking Dead characters in the Rick Grimes movies would have been challenging for sure if both the show and the movies were happening at the same time. The Walking Dead would have to temporarily write them off, and bring them back later. The show would presumably have to go a season or more without these characters. However, the Walking Dead ending at season 11 allows AMC to avoid this situation altogether.

Now, it’s become possible for AMC to work in an even bigger crossover that involves nearly all the characters. Season 11’s conclusion could lead directly to the movies, with Alexandria finding out that Rick is alive and with the CRM organization. The movies would also be free to use any and all of the characters from the series (with possible exceptions of Daryl and Carol, since they’ll be on their own spinoff). Parts of the Walking Dead spin-off films could be even be set in Alexandria, with a group forming a rescue party to go after Rick.
